Low production of rice and horticultural crops can be caused by the limited supply of high quality seeds. The quality can be seen from the moisture content, viability value and seed vigor. One of the efforts that can be made to maintain or improve seed quality is seed coating technology. This study aims to determine the effect of seed coating in maintaining and improving the quality of rice seeds, TSS merang onion seeds, red chili seeds, and cucumber seeds. The research was conducted from November 2021 to January 2022 at the Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) of Rice and Palawija Seed Development Singosari, Malang, East Java. The experiment used a completely randomized design (CRD) with a single factor, namely the type of seed coating material. The seed coating materials for rice seeds were CMC 1.5% + Liquid Smoke 0.5% + CaCO 3 8 g + Gypsum 32 g, CMC 1.5% + Liquid Smoke 0.5% + CaCO 3 8 g + Dolomite 32 g, and CMC 1.5% + Liquid Smoke 0.5% + CaCO 3 8 g + Kapur Tohor 32 g. While the seed coating materials for TSS shallot seeds, red chili seeds, and cucumber seeds were CMC 1.5% + Humic Acid 0.6% + Gypsum 20 g. The results showed that the composition of the coating material CMC 1.5% + Liquid smoke 0.5% + CaCO 3 8 g + Gypsum 32 g produced the highest quality of rice seeds, while the coating material CMC 1.5% + Humic Acid 0.6% + Gypsum 20 g could improve the quality of TSS onion and cucumber seeds.

Many food industry products require preservatives to extend their shelf life. Natural preservatives are a necessity for safe food products. One natural preservative can be made from coconut shells. Liquid smoke from coconut shells is produced using liquid smoke pyrolysis equipment which has been developed by authors called Technoher. This study aimed to compare physical and chemical properties of various grades of liquid smoke from coconut shells produced using Technoher equipment, and study the specific applications of liquid smoke based on the grades. To produce the expected quality (3 grades), 3 treatments are made. The results showed that Grade 1 (G1) specifically the G1+ treatment sample had the lowest PAH value of 0.00 µg/g, while the G1 had a value of 0.007 µg/g. Grade 2 consisting of G2 and G2+ treatments, yielded PAH values of 0.002 µg/g, and 0.006 µg/g respectively, while Grade 3, produced a value of 0.026 µg/g. Based on the results, the three grades of Coconut liquid smoke were within the tolerance limit for PAH (Benzo (a) pyrene). The products contain no toxic substances and are safe, with Grades 1 and 2 are food grade, while Grade 3 has the potential for non-food preservation (non-food grade).

Plant-derived smokes has antimicrobial activity and have been reported to have the ability to promote germination for various kinds of plant seeds. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of coconut shell burning smoke against the level of fungal infection, dormancy, and the physiological quality of shallot seed bulb. The research design used was a factorial randomized block design. The first factor is the smoking time (t), with 3 levels of treatments (t1 = 40 minutes, t2 = 80 minutes, t3 = 120 minutes) and the second factor is the temperatures of the biomass reactor (T), with 2 treatments (T1 = 200 ± 50 oC and T2 = 300 ± 50 oC). The smoking process using the pyrolysis-external heating method was carried out without affecting the moisture content of the seeds. The smoking with reactor temperature of 300 oC and duration of 40 minutes gave the same effect as the treatment of the highest temperature and duration, two of these treatments gave the highest antimicrobial effect and dormancy compared to other treatments. The smoking with 300 oC reactor temperature and 40 minutes duration gave an average dormancy of 96.3±10.1 (DAH) and 50.7±1.8 % infection.
