RESUMO Desempenho, características de carcaça e custos da terminação de cordeiros Suffolk em sistemas com desmame precoce e amamentação controladaO objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho, as características de carcaça e os custos da terminação de cordeiros Suffolk em três sistemas: (1) cordeiros desmamados com 22 kg de peso corporal (PC) e mantidos em pastagem com suplementação concentrada até o abate; (2) cordeiros desmamados com 22 kg de PC e confinados até o abate; (3) cordeiros mantidos em amamentação controlada após atingirem 22 kg de PC e confinados com alimentação em creep feeding até o abate. Os valores de ganho médio diário (GMD) foram 224 g/dia para os cordeiros desmamados e suplementados em pastagem; 386 g/dia para os cordeiros desmamados e confinados, e 481 g/dia para os cordeiros mantidos em amamentação controlada. O peso de corpo vazio e a deposição de gordura visceral foram maiores em The performance, carcass traits and finishing costs of Suffolk lambs were evaluated in three systems: (1) lambs weaned with 22 kg of body weight (BW) and supplemented with concentrate on pasture until slaughter; (2) lambs weaned with 22 kg BW and fed in feedlot until slaughter; (3) lambs maintained in controlled nursing after 22 kg BW and creep fed in feedlot until slaughter. Average daily gain (ADG) was 224 g/d for lambs weaned and supplemented with concentrate on pasture, 386 g/d for lambs weaned in feedlot and 481 g/d for lambs under controlled nursing. Empty body weight and visceral fat deposition were highest in lambs from feedlot systems. Carcass weights and carcass yields were highest for lambs in controlled nursing. Finishing total costs were highest in controlled nursing and lowest in the system with weaning in feedlot. High concentrate diet associated with controlled nursing in feedlot allowed lambs to reach the growth potential and carcasses with higher weights, higher yields and higher fat content. After weaning, lambs in feedlot fed with high concentrate diet had higher weight gain than lambs supplemented with concentrate on pasture. Carcasses produced under these two systems presented the same characteristics. The system with weaning in feedlot showed the lowest cost per kg carcass.

This study evaluated the impact of nutritional status of Morada Nova sheep at lambing on the reproductive and productive performance and on the survival of lambs in early weaning system. Nineteen, Morada Nova sheep were assigned to two groups according to body condition score (BCS) at lambing: low BCS (n = 11) and high BCS (n=8) with body condition respectively of (mean ± SD) 2.0 ± 0.3 e 2.9 ± 0.1. From birth until lamb weaning (45 days), sheep were weighed weekly and checked the BCS, loin subcutaneous fat thickness, loin depth, hematological profile, milk composition and production, and every three days, we measured the uterine diameter. Lamb weightings were performed up to one week after weaning (52 days). The lower availability of muscle and fat reserves in the low BCS group negatively affected milk production and consequently performance of suckling lambs. However, the results indicated that the uterine involution process, the reproductive parameters including prolificacy, rate of multiple births, number of white blood cells, milk quality, body weight of lambs at birth and mortality rates were not affected by the body condition. The results allowed to describe the responsiveness to opposite nutritional status of Morada Nova sheep, showing their characteristics of adaptation. Key words: Body condition. Ewes. Milk. Lamb. ResumoO objetivo do trabalho foi verificar o impacto do estado nutricional de ovelhas Morada Nova ao parto sobre o seu desempenho reprodutivo e produtivo e sobre a sobrevivência de cordeiros em sistema de desmame precoce. Foram utilizadas 19 ovelhas Morada Nova, divididas em dois grupos de acordo com o escore da condição corporal ECC ao parto: grupo ECC baixo (n = 11) e ECC alto (n = 8) com escore médio (± DP) respectivamente de 2.0 ± 0.3 e 2.9 ± 0.1. RESUMOEsse caso tem por objetivo descrever um surto de ectima contagioso em ovelhas na região de Júlio de Castilhos / RS, bem como relatar os procedimentos realizados para tratar à infecção. Em um rebanho de cinquenta e seis animais observou-se inchaço submandibular dos lábios e narinas. Lesões nas regiões coronária e interdigital dos cascos. Algumas ovelhas apresentaram infecção nos tetos. Posteriormente observou-se pústulas e crostas nas regiões afetadas. Os resultados obtidos no laboratório mostraram que as amostras foram positivas para o efeito citopáticos compatível com vírus do ectima contagioso. O tratamento das lesões foi realizado com antibiótico e uma solução a 50% de clorohexidina digliconato e de iodo degermante à 10%, nas regiões lesionadas. A vacinação foi realizada em todos os animais do rebanho. Observou-se melhora acentuada dos sinais clínicos e das lesões que afetaram o rebanho. Não houve nenhum caso de morte no rebanho em virtude da infecção pelo vírus do ectima contagioso. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: vírus, infecção, pústulas, tratamento, vacina. CONTAGIOUS ECTHYMA IN SHEEP FROM MIDWEST OF RIO GRANDE DO SUL ABSTRACTThis case aims to describe an outbreak of contagious ecthyma in sheep in the region of Julio de Castilhos/RS, as well as reporting procedures performed to treat the infection. In a herd of fifty-six animals was observed submandibular swelling of lips and nostrils. Lesions in coronary and interdigital regions of the hooves. Some sheep had infection in mammary tits. Later there was pustules and crusts in the affected regions. The results obtained in the laboratory showed that the samples were positive for cytopathic effect compatible with contagious ecthyma virus. Treatment of the lesions was performed with antibiotics and a 50% solution of chlorhexidine
