Green mold, caused by the fungus Penicillium digitatum, is the primary issue in the post-harvest phase of oranges that causes significant losses. Consequently, the objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of alternative products in the management of green mold in postharvest oranges. Four in vitro experiments were conducted. Three assessed the effects of different concentrations of each alternative product (potassium phosphite, Ascophyllum nodosum extract, and organomineral fertilizer) on the production of fresh mycelial weight of P. digitatum; and a fourth evaluated the effects of alternative products compared to that of the conventional product (benzimidazole fungicide). Subsequently, ‘Valencia’ oranges were subjected to the treatments, which consisted of distilled water (inoculated and non-inoculated control), potassium phosphite, A. nodosum extract, organomineral fertilizer, and benzimidazole fungicide. The fruits were inoculated with P. digitatum and evaluated daily for the incidence and severity of green mold over seven days. Furthermore, the effects of the treatments on the physicochemical quality of fruits were evaluated for the following attributes: skin and pulp color, firmness of the pulp, pH, titratable acidity (TA), soluble solids (SS), and the SS/TA ratio. Potassium phosphite and A. nodosum extract inhibited the in vitro development of P. digitatum. The alternative products reduced the incidence and severity of green mold on oranges without compromising the physicochemical quality of the fruit. Therefore, the evaluated products can be used in the postharvest treatment of oranges and are considered promising alternatives for the management of green mold.

This work aimed to verify the effect in vitro, of Ascophyllum nodosum (AN) seaweed extract on the morphology and cellulolytic capacity of the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. vasinfectum (FOV). Thus, the fungus was placed in contact with different doses of the extract, being these: 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0 and 8.0%. It was verified that the product, with increasing doses, progressively induced mycelial growth of the fungus, as measured by the diameter of the colonies and fresh mass of mycelium grown in PD (potato-dextrose) culture medium. This result was also corroborated by the progressive increase in the activity of the β-1,3-glucanase and chitinase enzymes required during the hypha elongation process. However, the AN extract progressively reduced FOV sporulation with increasing doses. Furthermore, the cellulolytic capacity of the phytopathogen was significantly reduced in the presence of the algae extract, which was measured by the activity of the enzymes endo-β-1,4-glucanase, exo-β-1,4-glucanase and β-glucosidase. Thus, these facts constitute important information for the management of fusariosis, since the inhibition of sporulation and decreasing degradation capacity of the cellulose by the pathogen, can translate into declined disease in compatible host-pathogen interactions.

Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho avaliar a eficácia de diferentes dosagens de um produto à base de extrato da alga Ascophyllum nodosum no manejo do bolor verde em pós-colheita de citros. Utilizou-se as dosagens de 0; 25; 50; 75 e 100 mL L-1 do produto comercial à base do extrato da alga, como comparativo, um fungicida sistêmico do grupo dos benzimidazóis. Foram realizados experimentos in vitro para verificar o efeito do produto à base do extrato da alga e seus possíveis mecanismos de ação, por meio das seguintes análises: crescimento micelial, esporulação, perda de eletrólitos e atividade fungicida e/ou fungistática. Em seguida, realizou-se experimento in vivo a fim de se avaliar a incidência e severidade do bolor verde nos frutos de laranjeira ‘Valencia’ tratados com o produto. Foi observado que as dosagens de 75 e 100 mL L-1 foram as mais eficazes na redução do crescimento micelial e da produção de conídios do patógeno, sendo constatado um efeito fungistático do produto. Verificou-se que o produto altera a permeabilidade da membrana plasmática do fungo na dosagem de 100 mL L-1, podendo ser um possível mecanismo de ação sobre o patógeno, além de ser capaz de reduzir a incidência e a severidade do bolor verde em pós-colheita nos frutos de laranjeira na dosagem de 75 mL L-1. Portanto, conclui-se que o produto à base de extrato da alga A. nodosum pode ser incluído ao manejo integrado de doenças em pós-colheita de citros.
