The present study aimed to evaluate ducks on performance, carcass traits and economic availability, fed on different phases of nutritional plans and in different housing densities. Two hundred and forty Muscovy ducks of creole lineage were used, distributed in boxes with water and food ad libitum. The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial arrangement of 3x2 with three nutritional plans (3, 4 and 5 phases) and two housing densities (2 and 3 birds/m2) with four replicates. The ducks had weekly performance evaluations, and after 90 days, four birds in each treatment were slaughtered for evaluation of carcass traits. Differences (p<0.05) were observed on performance, carcass traits and economic analysis. The nutritional plans with 3 phases showed better results for feed intake and weight gain, as well as provided lower total cost production and higher operating profit. Ducks in higher densities showed smaller feed intake, weight gain, higher pro-ventricle weight and better results for total meet production, crude income and operating profit. In summary, nutritional plans with reduced phases (3 phases) and extensions of energy-protein relationships showed better results for ducks on performance and carcass traits in densities of 3 birds/m². More studies are necessary to determine other nutritional requirements for ducks in housing for a better nutritional and management control.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different litter materials on litter compaction, broiler feathering and the incidence of carcass lesions. In the experiment, 3240 one-day-old Ross ® chicks were selected by sex and distributed according to a completely randomized experimental design in a 2 x 6 factorial arrangement (two sex and six litter materials). The following litter materials were used: wood shavings, rice husks, chopped Napier grass, 50% sugar cane bagasse plus 50% wood shavings, 50% sugar cane bagasse plus 50% rice husks, and pure sugar cane bagasse. Litter compaction was weekly assessed using a penetrometer. On days 21, 35 and 42 of the experimental period, feathering on the back and legs was scored according to a 0 -10 scale. On day 42, birds were slaughtered and the presence of bruises, scratches and footpad lesions was recorded. Litter material had no effect on bird feathering. Carcass lesions (scratches, bruises and footpad lesions) were influenced by the litter material evaluated. Birds reared on sugarcane bagasse and chopped Napier grass presented more scratches, bruises and footpad lesions than the others. Dermatitis was more evident in birds reared on sugarcane bagasse, chopped Napier grass and the combination of litter materials. It was found that males presented higher incidence of dermatitis and footpad lesions than females. Each litter material presented different compaction degrees, which increased along the experimental period. Sugarcane bagasse, chopped Napier grass and the combination of bedding materials presented the highest degree of compaction, compared with wood shavings and rice husks.

RESUMO.O experimento teve por objetivo avaliar o efeito do sistema de criação e da época do ano, sobre o desempenho e qualidade da carne de frangos de corte. Foram estudadas 524.000 aves da linhagem comercial Cobb 500, distribuídas em três galpões com diferentes sistemas de automatização, durante as quatro estações do ano. O delineamento foi inteiramente casualizado, com esquema fatorial 3 x 4 (tipo de galpão x época do ano). Foram utilizadas rações do sistema integrado, cama de palha de arroz, e as aves foram abatidas em um frigorífico aos 43 dias de idade. Foram avaliados os dados de desempenho (consumo de ração, ganho de peso diário, conversão alimentar e mortalidade), com dados fornecidos pelo sistema integrado. Também, foram avaliados os defeitos nas carcaças, e análises de pH, maciez e perda de água da carne. As aves criadas nos sistemas automatizado e semiautomatizado, e nos períodos mais quentes do ano, apresentaram menor rendimento de carcaça e piores características de qualidade de carne (maior perda de peso, menor maciez e maior acidez), e maior incidência de defeitos nas carcaças. As aves criadas no sistema não-automatizado e nos períodos mais frios apresentaram melhor desempenho, com menor índice de mortalidade e melhor qualidade da carne.Palavras-chave: defeitos de carcaça, perda de peso, taxa de mortalidade, fator de produção, pH, força de cisalhamento.ABSTRACT. Effect of handling system and seasons of the year on performance, carcass yield and meat quality of broiler chicken. This study had as objective to evaluate the effect of the handling system and season of the year on the performance and meat quality of broiler chicken. Five hundred twenty-four thousand commercial Cobb 500 chicks were allocated in three different handling systems, during the four seasons of the year. The experimental design was completely randomized, with a 3 x 4 factorial scheme (three types of storage shed and four seasons). The diet was provided by a co-operative system and consisted of rice straw, and the broilers were slaughtered in a slaughterhouse at 43 days of age. Feed intake, weight, daily weight gain and mortality rate were available with data provided by the co-operative system. Carcass defects were also evaluated, and analyses of pH, tenderness and drip loss of meat were determined. The chickens raised in automatic and semi-automatic systems and during warm seasons showed lower carcass yield and worse meat quality (great values of drip loss and acidity, small values of tenderness), and higher rates of carcass defects. Chickens raised in a non-automatic system and during cold seasons showed the best performance, with low mortality rate and the best meat quality.Key words: carcass defects, drip loss, mortality rate, production factor, pH, shear force.
