Edaravone reduces depression severity in patients with symptomatic intracranial stenosis and is associated with the serum expression of sex hormones

Abstract: Objective: To investigate the effect of edaravone on depression relief in symptomatic patients with intracranial stenosis and its relationship with the expression of sex hormones. Methods: We recruited 112 patients with symptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis from Renmin Hospital, Wuhan University, between October 2014 and October 2017. All patients were divided into the traditional or experimental (traditional treatment + intravenous infusion of eda… Show more

“…The treatment of symptomatic ICAS, which seriously affects patients' quality of life and increases the socioeconomic burden, is a hot topic of clinical research, but the choice between pharmacological and PTA treatment modalities has been controversial. Studies have shown that PTA can partially restore neurological function and reduce mortality in patients with symptomatic ICAS [11] , but complications related to ischemia-reperfusion, embolic dislodgement, and bleeding can increase stroke recurrence and mortality, seriously affecting the clinical prognosis of patients [12] . Some studies also suggested that aggressive pharmacological interventions are preferable to PTA [13] .…”

“…Nearly no literature exists concerning the neurocognitive function of patients with middle cerebral artery stenosis (MCAS) and objective cerebral ischemia. Our previous study therefore investigated the protective effect of edaravone on symptomatic intracranial artery stenosis after stent implantation and its relationship with sex hormones (10). The aim of the present study was to evaluate the cognitive function changes in chronic MCAS patients accepted before and after MCA angioplasty and to explore the influence of MCAS and objective cerebral ischemia.…”

“…The main underling mechanism consists of antiapoptotic properties of this substance would have a boosting effect on BCL-2 expression by demonstrating mitochondrial functional recovery, which is achieved by ATP production modulation and inhibiting mitochondrial swelling during accumulation of reactive oxygen species in neural cell [15,16]. EDV can modulate HPA-axis function and gene pathways related to depression [17,18].…”
