Ectopic expression of wheat TaCIPK14, encoding a calcineurin B‐like protein‐interacting protein kinase, confers salinity and cold tolerance in tobacco

Abstract: Calcineurin B-like protein-interacting protein kinases (CIPKs) are components of Ca(2+) signaling in responses to abiotic stresses. In this work, the full-length cDNA of a novel CIPK gene (TaCIPK14) was isolated from wheat and was found to have significant sequence similarity to OsCIPK14/15. Subcellular localization assay revealed the presence of TaCIPK14 throughout the cell. qRT-PCR analysis showed that TaCIPK14 was upregulated under cold conditions or when treated with salt, PEG or exogenous stresses related… Show more

“…The results of these two studies reveal that during cold exposure some proteins are phosphorylated by protein kinases, whereas others are dephosphorylated by protein phosphatases. Presently, many different kinases or phosphatases under cold stress had been identified, such as Calcium dependent protein kinases (CDPK)16, Ca 2+ /calmodulin-dependent protein kinases (CAMK)17, MAPK (mitogen activated protein kinase) module718, STY kinases19, CBL-interacting protein kinase (CIPK)2021, OST122 and AP2C1 proteins23. Phosphorylation changes of MAPK cascades in plant cold resistance have been well reported, particularly in model plants.…”

“…Though more than 29 CIPK genes have been found in wheat, only a few of them had been functionally analyzed, such as TaCIPK14 [15], TaCIPK19 ( WPK 4) [28], TaCIPK24 [7] and TaCIPK29 [29]. In this study, we found that TaCIPK2 was up-regulated in wheat leaves by PEG, H 2 O 2 , and ABA treatments (Fig 3B–3D), implying a potential role of TaCIPK2 in stress responses.…”

“…The AtCBL4-CIPK24 (SOS3-SOS2) complex specifically regulates Na + efflux by the Na + /H + antiporter and enhances salt tolerance [10, 11]. The overexpression of many CIPK genes increases salt tolerance in plants, including ZmCIPK21 in maize [12], HbCIPK2 in Hordeum brevisubulatum [13], PeCIPK24-26 in Populus species [14], and TaCIPK14 in wheat [15]. These genes are involved in the salt overly sensitive (SOS) signaling pathway.…”

“…Over-expression of DREB1 by the 35S CaMV promoter increases stress tolerance to drought, high salinity, and freezing in transgenic Arabidopsis plants [31,32]. The ectopic over-expression of Solanum DREB1 confers increased tolerance to high-salt conditions [33]. These results suggest that ZmCIPK21 may play a positive role in salt stress by regulating DREB1B and DREB1C in Arabidopsis .…”
