Inadequate management of the irrigation system has compromised yield and favoured the degradation and waste of water resources. To ensure efficient irrigation management, providing yield increases, sustainability in the use of water resources and reduction of production costs, studies about the water demand of coconut palms are needed. The objective of this study was to determine the energy partition, crop evapotranspiration (ET c ), and the simple crop coefficients (K c ) of the green dwarf coconut palms in Santa Izabel do Pará, Pará, Brazil. The experiment was carried out in a coconut plantation at Reunidas Sococo Farm, with an area of approximately 7 ha in a triangular spacing of 7.5 × 7.5 m, during 2020 and 2021. The ETc was determined by the Bowen ratio method, with measurements of temperature and relative humidity at two levels above the crop canopy and reference evapotranspiration (ET o ) by the FAO Penman-Monteith method, using data from the National Institute of Meteorology. The K c was determined by the ratio between ETc and ETo. The total water demand of the coconut palm was 489 (2020) and 480 mm (2021), with a daily average of 4.21 (2020) and 4.14 mm (2021) for the dry season. The mean value of K c was 1.06 (± 0.12). Evapotranspiration was driven mainly by energy availability, associated with a control of atmospheric demand on K c values, suggesting a possible influence of coconut trees on Kc values even under good water availability and small variability in vegetation cover.

India is highly diverse ranging from snow-capped mountains to deserts, plateaus, and plain regions. It has a tropical climate with diverse climatic condition that favors the cultivation of wide range of fruit, vegetables, cereals, pulses, cotton, and various crops of medicinal importance making it one of the top producers in the world. India ranks second in the production of coconut grown in coastal regions playing a significant role in the agrarian economy and is known as a Nature’s gift to mankind; it is a source of food, beverage, oil seed, fibers, timbers, and health products. Further, it is a highly appreciated fruit with antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, antiparasitic, antiviral, and many other qualities. Considering the growing increase in consumption of coconut and its products and the large number of studies that address the theme, it is felt necessary to carry out a bibliographic survey based on the most current and relevant works in the area using books, journal articles, and other available print and electronic resources. This study attempts to gather information on a detailed assessment of the coconut; its uses in rituals, its health benefits, and culinary preparations across India as the delicacies of immemorial ethnic fruit are of rising significance. The importance and significance of documenting this coconut ethnicity in Indian cuisine are an attempt to keep it relevant and take it to broader viewers who admire such unique delicacies. The study reveals coconut has a high value in Indian ritual, and the survey of pharmacological studies on its medicinal uses supports its beneficial properties to human health.

Coconut palm tree ( Cocos nucifera L .) tissues were used as a readily available, low-cost and green adsorbent to desalinate seawater. The tree bark (CB), husk (CH), leaves (CL) and roots (CR) were examined in their fresh (F) and dry (D) forms. The salinity removal (adsorption) efficiency followed the trend: F_CB ≈ F_CR > F_CL > D_CR > F_CL > D_CR. The sorbents from the coastal region desalinated more efficiently than those from a non-coastal region. Also, the fresh tissues were more effective and efficient than the dry parts. The salinity retention ability (desalination : desorption) follows the trend: F_CR (22.2) > F_CB (19.0) ≫ D_CR (12.3) > D_CB (11.0) > D_CL (6.14) ≈ F_CL (6.10) > F_CH (4.3) > D_CH (2.1). Moreover, the desalination fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetics than the pseudo-first-order, suggesting the predominance of chemisorption over physical removal. Overall, water pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids and dissolved oxygen (DO) correlated positively and strongly with desalination. By contrast, the density and redox potential correlated negatively, whereas temperature and DO showed no definite influence. Conclusively, F_CR and F_CB are the most suitable coconut palm tree tissues for desalination. Future studies should include chemical characterization of the tissues and system optimization for upscaling. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Developing resilient energy systems’.
