This study aimed to carry out an ethnobotanical survey of medicinal plants used by inhabitants of the Rodeadouro Island, Jatoba Island and Massangano Island, located in The Submedium São Francisco River Valley. Also phytochemicals and preliminary pharmacological tests were performed to species most cited by the community. Ethnobotanical data were collected through observation visits and semi-structured interviews with 12 key informants. We calculated the relative importance (RI), the percentage of agreement related to the main uses (cAMU) and use value (UV). The aerial parts of Rhaphiodon echinus (Ness & Mart.) Schauer were used to obtain the lyophilizate (LYO-Re), crude ethanol extract (CEE-Re) and their hexanic (HEX-Re), chloroform (CLO-Re) and ethyl acetate (EA-Re) fractions. The microdilution technique was used for determining Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for selected microorganisms. Already the spasmolytic effect was evaluated in isolated uterus fragments of Wistar rats, pre contracted with KCl 60 mM. We found 34 species cited, belonging to 22 families. The most plants were grown by locals. There were 51 different diseases, but the main indication was infectious and parasitic diseases. The species R. echinus was the most reported and it was indicated for urinary tract infection and dysmenorrhea. The screening revealed a higher prevalence of flavonoids, tannins, lignans and saponins in LYO-Re and AE-Re. Already terpene compounds were more present in HEX-Re and CLO-Re. The RE-Re fraction stood out with strong effect against E. coli and S. aureus while CEE-Re has moderate effect against gram-negative bacteria. The evaluation of the spasmolytic activity showed that LYO-Re, CEE-Re and HEX-Re fractions have similar activity, with partial effect and concentration-dependent response. This work brought about knowledge and use of medicinal plants by the riparian of the São Francisco River. It also revealed the importance of other methodologies for scientific evidence for the popular use of R. echinus.

Introdução: Candida tropicalis é um agente frequente de candidemia em hospitaisbrasileiros, sendo a segunda espécie mais comumente isolada. A infecção por esseagente pode ocorrer em pacientes de todas as idades, mas acomete pacientes adultose idosos com maior frequência. As candidemias estão relacionados aos animais.Consequentemente, os fármacos que afetam as células fúngicas também podemafetar as células humanas, fato que torna difícil o tratamento das infecções fúngicas.O aumento da resistência a antifúngicos alerta para a necessidade da ampliação deestratégias que impeçam a sua dispersão entre os fungos, como já aconteceu com asbactérias, que se depara distribuída e fora de controle. Por isso, é necessário, novasformas de estudos sobre alternativas terapêuticas, os fitoterápicos podem ser utilizadoscomo nova opção de tratamento. Objetivo: determinar a concentração inibitóriamínima da fase clorofórmica de Raphiodon echinus sobre cepas de Candidatropicalis. Metodologia: utilizou-se o método de determinação da ConcentraçãoInibitória Mínima (CIM) sobre a técnica de microdiluição em caldo. Resultados:obteve-se uma CIM50 de 256 μg/mL para as cepas do fungo. Conclusão: dessamaneira, pode-se observar a possível utilização desta substância para posteriorestratamentos das doenças originadas pelas leveduras de Candida tropicalis.

Context Resupination is the movement of developing buds that leads to a vertical inversion of the flowers at an angle of 180°. Chamaecrista nictitans exhibits two anther sizes, and nonresupinate and resupinate flowers in the same individual, which is known as monomorphic resupinate dimorphy. Aims We aimed to investigate the influence of monomorphic resupinate dimorphy upon pollen deposition on pollinators, capture by the stigma and on plant reproduction, using three populations of C. nictitans from NE Brazil as a model. Methods We assessed the floral biology, the proportion of nonresupinate and resupinate flowers in the populations, dynamics of pollen transfer between floral morphs, and the plant’s reproductive system. Key results All flowers have two anther sizes with similar pollen viability. The proportion of nonresupinate:resupinate flowers was 3:1 in all populations. The bee Florilegus (Euflorilegus) sp. was the only pollinator observed and had pollen of both flower morphs deposited on the underside part of the thorax and abdomen. The stigma of nonresupinate flowers received pollen from the pollinators’ underside of the abdomen, whereas the stigma of resupinate flowers received pollen from the pollinators’ underside of the thorax. The species is self-compatible but does not set fruits by spontaneous self-pollination. Therefore, natural fruit set had resulted from both intramorph- and intermorph-pollination in the same or in different individuals. Conclusions Both flower types have a similar pattern of pollen deposition on the pollinator’s body (underside of the abdomen and thorax) and only differ in relation to areas of pollen capture by the stigma (underside of the abdomen or underside of thorax). Implications The monomorphic resupinate dimorphy observed here improves the area of pollen deposition by the anthers on pollinator’s body and makes the capture of pollen by stigma sectored in the different floral types, similar to what is observed in other species presenting floral polymorphisms.
