Ecological intensification, or the improvement of crop yield through enhancement of biodiversity, may be a sustainable pathway toward greater food supplies. Such sustainable increases may be especially important for the 2 billion people reliant on small farms, many of which are undernourished, yet we know little about the efficacy of this approach. Using a coordinated protocol across regions and crops, we quantify to what degree enhancing pollinator density and richness can improve yields on 344 fields from 33 pollinator-dependent crop systems in small and large farms from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. For fields less than 2 hectares, we found that yield gaps could be closed by a median of 24% through higher flower-visitor density. For larger fields, such benefits only occurred at high flower-visitor richness. Worldwide, our study demonstrates that ecological intensification can create synchronous biodiversity and yield outcomes.
COMPARATIVE STUDY OF POLLINATION OF Mangifera indica L. IN CONVENTIONAL AND ORGANIC CROPS IN THE REGION OF THE SUBMÉDIO SÃO FRANCISCO VALLEYABSTRACT-This study was carried out in 2005 and 2006, in a commercial mango Tommy Atkins plantation on Frutex Farm, in Petrolina-PE. The objective was to verify the floral biology as well as the comparative study of behaviour, the frequency and the seasonality of the floral visitors in both organic and conventional crops. The mango tree inflorescences present male and hermaphrodite flowers (2:1), with predominance of the first ones in the basis of the panicles. The anthesis is diurnal, asynchronic, with liberation of strong and sweat odour. The flowers present dicogamy, characterized by the anthers dehiscence 24 hours after the anthesis. The nectar production is continuous and in small amounts, on an average of 0,045μL/flower. Concerning the flower visitors, 21 species were registered, belonging to the orders Diptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera and Odonata. Apis mellifera was the most frequent visitant in both types of crops. Among the Diptera, Belvosia bicincta (17,7%) and Musca domestica (10,2%) were the most frequent visitors in conventional and organic crops, respectively. The diversity and number of visitors were higher in the organic crop. The use of agrotoxics during the flowering period reduced the visit of bees (50%) and Diptera (20%). Because of its behaviour, frequency and active movement in the inflorescences, Apis mellifera was considered as the most efficient pollinator of the crop for the region of the São Francisco Submédio Valley.
This work was carried out in Petrolina, PE, Brazil with the objective of identifying the floral visitors of weeds, and classifying them as pollinators and pollen and/or nectar thieves, according to their behavior. The observations were made between May and October of 1998, in 26 not consecutive days, between 7:00 am and 4:00 pm. The weeds were classified in nectariferous and polliniferous when these were visited exclusively for collection of nectar or pollen, and mixed when these were visited to collect both. A grade system was adopted for the frequency evaluation: a-number of visits >30, b -between 10 to 30, c -<10. Among the 24 weeds observed, 14 were classified as nectariferous, six as polliniferous and four were considered mixed. Among the floral visitors, the following bees were registered (Xylocopa grisescens, X. frontalis, Centris aff. perforator, Ptilotrix aff. plumata, Diadasina riparia, Apis mellifera, Trigona spinipes, Eulaema nigrita), butterflies (Ascia monuste, Papilio thoas brasiliensis, Agraulis vanillae) and hummingbirds (Phaethornis sp., Chlorostilbon aureoventris). The bees were predominant in number of species (61.5%) as well as in the frequency of visits. They acted as pollinator agents in 83...
In this sense, this paper aims to verify whether there are differences in behavior and in the floral visits by Apis mellifera foraged in three types of melon. The study was conducted at the Experimental Field of Embrapa Semiárido, Petrolina, PE, with yellow-type cultivars (Araguaia BRS), piel de sapo melon (P-33) and cantaloupe (CAN-4), with observations of floral biology, morphology and behavior of A. mellifera in the period from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00p.m. The visitation's peak was different, occurring from 11:00 to 12:00a.m., 10:00 to 11:00a.m. and 03:00 to 04:00p.m. for the yellow kind, cantaloupe and piel de sapo, respectively. As for the floral foraging, collecting nectar was constant throughout the day, while pollen occurred mainly in the morning. Regarding the type floral, hermaphrodite flowers were, in general, more visits in the cultivar type and piel de sapo, the inverse of the type registered for the cantaloupe. The greatest number of visits recorded in this floral type can be attributed to morphological differences, since its flowers are larger and therefore could be more attractive.
