Extended floral longevity initiated with self-pollen tubes growing in the style indicates some kind of pollen tube-pistil interaction. Fruit set only in chase pollinations up to 3 h implies that self-pollen tubes either grow more slowly in the style or penetrate ovules more slowly on arrival at the ovary compared with cross-tubes. This agrees with previous observations indicating that the incidence of penetrated ovules is initially lower in selfed compared with crossed pistils. However, the low seed yield from mixed pollinations indicates that self- and cross-pollen tubes arrive at the ovary and penetrate ovules more or less simultaneously. Possible explanations for these discordant results are discussed.
This survey was carried out in a semidecidual forest at the Estação Ecológica de Paulo de Faria, situated along one of the margins of the Rio Grande, in the north of the state of São Paulo (19°58’S e 49°32’W). The Estação Ecológica comprises an area of 435.73 ha. The local climate has two well defined seasons, a dry season from April to September, with a mean rainfall of 167 mm and a wet season from October to March, with a mean rainfall of 978 mm. The soil is caracterized as purpler latosol and predominantly originated from the neocretaceous sediments of Bauru formation. The area was divided into three sampling sites in order to perform the floristic survey. A number of 201 species was identified, being distributed into 149 genera and 60 families (187 were Magnoliopsida, 10 Liliopsida and 4 Pterydophyta). The families with the highest number of species were Leguminosae (14.42%), Bignoniaceae (6.00%), Euphorbiaceae (6.00%) and Apocynaceae (3.50%). A low floristic similarity between this forest and those included in other studies was observed
RESUMO -(Ecologia da polinização deIpomoea asarifolia (Ders.) Roem. & Schult. Palavras-chave -biologia floral, sistema de reprodução, Ipomoea asarifolia, Convolvulaceae, invasora ABSTRACT -(Pollination ecology of Ipomoea asarifolia (Ders.) The present work was carried out during March/1995 to July/1997, to study aspects of the phenology, pollination and reproduction of Ipomoea asarifolia growing at Fazenda Catalunha, Santa Maria da Boa Vista, PE. I. asarifolia is a perennial creeping liana with floration registered in the period of March to October, characterized as a cornucopian pattern of flowering. The flowers are gathered in cymes, with a pink funnel-like corolla with magenta mesopetals working as nectar guides. The anthesis is diurnal (05:30 -06:00 h) and the flowers lasting for approximately six hours. The amount of nectar secreted by flower is less then 1µl. Bees Megachilidae and Apidae were the main visitors of this Convolvulaceae. Liturge huberi Ducke was considered as effective pollinatior, and Acamptopoeum prinii Holm. and Diadasina riparia Ducke as occasional. Ipomoea asarifolia is self-incompatible, producing fruits and viable seeds only after crossed pollination. However the tests of pollen
The Melastomataceae display greater trichome diversity. Dr. Wurdack, in his Atlas of hairs, recognized 46 types of trichomes for the Neotropical Melastomataceae through the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and referred 17 of them to the genus Tibouchina. The trichome morphology has been extensively used in the delimitation of the taxa in Melastomataceae, as well as in previous studies by Cogniaux, the monograph of Brazilian Melastomataceae published in 1885. The morphology of the trichomes was essential for the delimitation of several species in Tibouchina section Pleroma. The use of SEM provided the best characterization of the 15 different types of trichomes recognized among the 41 species examined. These were described based on the morphological appearance, both optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and illustrated by scanning electron micrographs and photomicrographs.
