Echinococcal cyst of the kidney: A review of the management of 11 cases

Abstract: Echinococcal cyst of the kidney is uncommon, accounting for only 2 to 3% of all hydatid diseases. This study is a review of 11 cases of echinococcal cysts all of which were located in the kidney. All patients presented non-specific clinical symptoms. Serologic tests were carried out and excretory urography and sonography were taken. Computed tomography was performed in five patients. Out of 11 cases, four underwent total nephrectomy, and seven enucleation. Albeit rare, hydatid disease should be considered in t… Show more

“…In these cases, cyst contents should be aspirated initially, and the cyst should be filled with a scolecidal agent such as 30% sodium chloride, 2% formalin or 1% iodine for approximately 5 min to kill the germinal portions of cyst. 20 Of our 10 cases, five patients underwent total nephrectomy because of large cyst size and loss of renal function. We performed adrenalectomy in one case, endocystectomy plus partial excision and plication of ectocyst in two cases involving paravesical and retrovesical hydatid cysts, and total excision of the right parapelvic cyst.…”

“…In addition, as the cysts located in the peritoneal cavity, it may induce primary infertility as well as the symptoms of the digestive system and adjacent organs such as abdominal pain and general malaise. Besides, renal mass, hematuria, albuminuria, or hydatidosis can be seen in the kidney-located cysts [17]. In the present case, multiple secondary hydatid cysts in the abdomen, falciform ligament, spleen, right paracolic area, and sigmoid mesentery were exhibited to bring to mind the possibility of being an iatrogenic intraperitoneal spread at his previous surgical procedure.…”

“…During surgery, the abdominal cavity is isolated using gauze soaked in scolicidal agents such as 20 % hypertonic saline or 10 % povidone-iodine to prevent dissemination and allergic reactions. 6 Other scolicidal agents include cetrimide, chlorhexidine, and absolute alcohol. Percutaneous aspiration of CE is not recommended, and albendazole is recommended in symptomatic cases or those with dissemination, with a dosage of 10–15 mg/kg/day for 1–3 months.…”
