ECG vs. single-antenna system for heartbeat activity detection

Abstract: This paper presents a single antenna Doppler system for contactless heartbeat monitoring. The proposed system, based on using a vector network analyzer, is tested at 16 GHz frequency for different transmitted power levels between 0 and -25 dBm. Both heartbeat rate and heart rate variability are extracted from the signals obtained with the Doppler system and compared to simultaneous ECG signals.

“…This system was used to measure the time-varying phase of the S 21 parameter for different operating frequencies and different radiated powers. In addition, a study using a 16 GHz singleantenna VNA system was realized to measure the S 11 phase variation for a person while holding the breath [11]. In this case, the same antenna is used for both emission and reception.…”

“…When the target is person breath normally, the modulation of the reflected signal contains information about chest displacement due to heartbeats and respiration. However, when holding breath, the chest displacement due only to heartbeats [2][3]. Hence, the measurement of this small displacement is the concerns for extracting the heartbeat signal.…”
