Eating patterns among heroin users: a qualitative study with implications for nutritional interventions

Abstract: Heroin users have dysfunctional eating patterns that are amenable to change and community and residential services could enable them to experience the many health, psychological and social benefits of improved eating practices. Nutritional interventions need to be tailored to individual needs and circumstances, but also monitored and evaluated so that there is a future evidence base.

“…Further, after completing the IC stages, the researcher will have a very good idea of which aspects of the data will make for interesting research papers and one or more analysis files can then be used to structure a journal article. For example, Figs 6 and 7 form the basis of Neale et al ., 2007 34 and Supporting information, Files S1–S4 form the basis of Neale et al ., 2012 5 and Neale & Strang, 2015 6. Using both the summary files and the more detailed analyses files, the researcher can thus write up themes, identify any new concepts or categories and document and endeavour to account for any patterns or associations in the data.…”

“…Uma série de trabalhos tem investigado os hábitos alimentares de dependentes químicos 9,18,23,24 . Esse campo de estudo tem sido mais explorado, pois já existem achados que mostram que o uso de substâncias psicoativas e o consumo alimentar ativam áreas cerebrais comuns 12 .…”

“…Oxidative stress could disturb thiol/disulfide homeostasis, causing disulfide formation and subsequently leading to changes in protein functions. Eating patterns in heroin addicts have been reported to vary according to many factors, but these addicts tend to eat cheap and quick food and often suffer from loss of appetite during active heroin use (8). So heroin addicts tend to have nutritional deficiencies.…”
