Easy and Unbiased Determination of the Maxillary Sinus Volume

Abstract: SUMMARY:Determining the volume of the maxillary sinus is necessary in certain procedures. We present a simple method for estimating the volume of the maxillary sinus from groups 3, 5 and 9 coronal CT scan using the Cavalieri method combined with systematic sampling and evaluated randomized images. We used 10 dry skulls submitted to the TC. The actual volume was determined using silicone adapted to the maxillary sinus cavity. The estimated volume showed a high correlation with real volume, with no differences b… Show more

“…For example, volumetric evaluation contributes to the assessment of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) because such a volumetric method better correlates with the severity of CRS compared with most widely used Lund-Mackay CT scoring system [ 10 ]. Furthermore, MS volume have been evaluated for verifying the response to chemo- and radiotherapy in malignant tumors [ 11 ] and for planning procedures that involve sinus floor elevation in the placement of implants [ 12 , 13 ] and endoscopic sinus surgery [ 2 , 14 ].…”

“…Recently, there are some measurement techniques, including caliper (Gouletsou et al, 2008), orchidometry (Paltiel et al), ultrasonography (Gouletsou et al; Paltiel et al) and the combination of MR-I and stereological volume estimation tool "Cavalieri method" (Coronado et al, 2011;Kabay et al, 2009;Gocmen-Mas et al, 2010) for in vivo testis volume measurements, and furthermore water displacement method "Archimedean principle" and individual administration of Cavalieri method (Akosman & Özdemir, 2010;I˙nce et al, 2012;Dorostghoal et al, 2011) for in vitro testis volume measurements. The volume estimation method "Cavalieri method" (Gundersen et al, 1988(Gundersen et al, , 1999) is unbiased and current way to estimate the volume and volume fractions of the organ (Gundersen et al, 1988).…”
