“…In DCs, the basal layer was found to be the proliferative compartment [34,35]. In PFs, Ki-67 immunolabeling revealed a lower proliferative activity (7.88%) [2,4], an expected finding for resting cells.…”

“…Several studies have reported differences in the proliferative potential of odontogenic epithelial cells, with significant impacts on the formation of odontogenic cysts and tumors [1][2][3][4][5]. Tissue homeostasis is maintained by a regulated balance between cell proliferation and cell death, and changes in the regulation of these mechanisms are implicated in the pathogenesis of several lesions.…”

“…The use of cell proliferating markers, such as integrins (Godoy et al, 2007), Ki-67 (Cabbar et al, 2008;Edamatsu et al, 2005) and PCNA (Adelsperger et al, 2000), has shown that the squamous metaplasia would be the first visible sign of cystic transformation of the DF and not a normal change due to advanced age. In our study, although we have not found a statistical association between PTCH labeling and the type of epithelial lining, probably due to the low number of PTCH-positive cells, the specimens with squamous metaplasia had higher rates of positivity for PTCH than DF with reduced enamel epithelium.…”

“…In the case of dentigerous cysts, squamous metaplasia of the reduced enamel epithelium appears to be the main feature, with the identification of a mainly continuous and thin epithelium in the specimen. 5,6 Integrins are a family of heterodimers with an important function in different biological activities, mediating cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix interactions. According to Decline and Rousselle 7 and DeHart et al, 8 integrins are involved in epithelial cell differentiation, a fact that indicates their use as additional differential markers in the distinction between IDC and EDF.…”
