Boutrup et al (2010) observed that L. intracellularis could be found within epithelial cells on the top of the villi, indicating infection in mature enterocytes, implying that these cells are also a target for the bacterium. This may be one possible explanation for the presence of antigens at the apex of the villi at 7 dpi in small intestines of all mice strains tested.…”
