Management of equine proliferative enteropathy

Abstract: Equine proliferative enteropathy is caused by Lawsonia intracellularis and mainly affects foals that are between two and 13 months of age. The epidemiology is not fully understood, but it is believed that transmission occurs by ingestion of faecal material from wild or domestic animals. This article describes the clinical signs and diagnosis of equine proliferative enteropathy and how to monitor a herd, together with possible treatment and prevention protocols.
