Dynamics of fishing gear allocation by fishers in small‐scale coastal fisheries of Pelabuhanratu Bay, Indonesia

Abstract: Fishing gear usage in small-scale coastal fisheries of Pelabuhanratu Bay, Indonesia was explained by two approaches: temporal fishing gear allocation analysis and adaptive responses of fishers to external factors, especially climate and abundance of target species. Gear usage, with the exception of hand lines and seine nets, was more intensive during the dry season than the rainy season. The decision to use seine nets was governed by seasonal variability in the abundance of Auxis thazard, Lacepe`de, and Trichi… Show more

“…The preference to fish within a defined area may be influenced by fishers' preferred gear, and by the small size and low engine power of their boats (Wiyono et al 2006;Piniella et al 2007). However, these hypotheses are not supported by our results, given that multiple gears are used within a single zone, and fishers from the same village tended to fish in the same PRS regardless of whether they owned a wooden plank boat with a small inboard engine or a fibreglass boat with a more powerful outboard engine.…”

“…In this context, it is important for fishery managers to understand the behavior of the fishers and assess the flexibility of one or several fleets under different conditions (Eales and Wilen 1986;Hilborn and Walters 1992;Pelletier and Ferraris 2000;Wilen et al 2002;Christensen and Raakjaer 2006;Fonseca et al 2008). Knowledge of the spatial distribution of fishing effort and gear dynamics associated with the behavior of fishers can contribute to this understanding (Ulrich and Andersen 2004;Wiyono et al 2006;Valcic 2009). …”

“…The results of this study suggest that these AR structures have failed to provide benefits to multiple gear users, especially drift net users, in Terengganu. Wiyono et al (2006) and Piniella et al (2007) report that fishing locations are generally determined by type of gear used, target fish species and capacity of boats. Previous studies also highlighted that low cost AR materials, such as derelict boats, tyres, and other wooden materials have aggregated fish that contributed to fishers' income (Viswanathan et al 1996).…”
