Dynamics of Fishing Gear and Spatial Allocation of Fishing Effort in a Multispecies Fleet

Abstract: Optimization of fishing effort allocation and efficient deployment of fishing gear are necessary for successful management of multispecies fisheries. Campeche Bank, located in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, provides an opportunity to understand fishing effort and fishing gear dynamics through the analysis of the fishing operations of a semi‐industrial fleet and obtain insights into how to identify management units for these types of fisheries. We analyzed the operation of this fleet over 4 years by splitting… Show more

“…The result of the cluster analysis confirms the relationship of fishing gear allocation between fishing grounds seasonally. As Monroy et al, (2010) stated, fishermen have a preferred fishing ground in regard to allocating their fishing gear. We expected the different fishing gear allocation to be influenced by catch landing, which is controlled by the monsoon season.…”

“…These choices are constrained by vessel characteristics and demands imposed by vessel owners and shore-based dealers. Their aggregate determines performance and performance can vary substantially from vessel to vessel and captain to captain (Dorn, 1998;Gillis et al, 1995b;Holland and Sutinen, 2000;Powell et al, 2003a,b;Monroy et al, 2010). The behavior of a fishing fleet and its performance variability has received considerable attention.…”
