Dynamic polarizability measurements with Lu+176

Abstract: We measure the differential polarizability of the 176 Lu + 1 S0 ↔ 3 D1 clock transition at multiple wavelengths. This experimentally characterizes the differential dynamic polarizability for frequencies up to 372 THz and allows an experimental determination of the dynamic correction to the blackbody radiation shift for the clock transition. In addition, measurements at the near resonant wavelengths of 598 and 646 nm determine the two dominant contributions to the differential dynamic polarizability below 372 T… Show more

“…As branching fractions provide ratios of matrix elements, all values are tied to the values of P 3/2 r S 1/2 and P 1/2 r S 1/2 reported in [4]. Thus, it would be of interest to confirm those results by a different methodology such as that demonstrated in [31,32]. However, it would likely be difficult to reach a comparable level of accuracy via that approach.…”

“…Results such as these can be factored into other experimental measurements or used as benchmarks against theoretical calculations. Given the combination of measurements and theory used here to provide new estimates of matrix elements, lifetimes, and branching ratios, it would be of interest to directly measure matrix elements by a different methodology such as that demonstrated in [27,28]. This would provide stringent tests of multiple precision measurements and theory.…”

“…Correlations corrections are very large for the nf Ba + states, which causes convergence issues in the LCC calculations that cannot be fixed with usual stabiliser methods [7]. We use additional fitting for the nf states to resolve this issue ensuring correct energies after the termination of the LCC calculations.…”

“…As demonstrated with Sr + and Ca + , this has allowed accurate determination of ∆α 0 (0) through suppression of clock frequency shifts arising from induced micromotion [2,3]. Other ion-based clocks have needed to rely on some form of extrapolation from measurements in the near-infrared (NIR) [4,5] and/or by measurement at infrared (IR) wavelengths near to the center of the blackbody spectrum [6][7][8].…”
