Branching fractions for P3/2 decays in Ba+

Abstract: Branching fractions for decays from the P 3/2 level in 138 Ba + have been measured with a single laser-cooled ion. Decay probabilities to S 1/2 , D 3/2 and D 5/2 are determined to be 0.741716(71), 0.028031(23) and 0.230253(61), respectively, which are an order of magnitude improvement over previous results. Our methodology only involves optical pumping and state detection, and is hence relatively free of systematic effects. Measurements are carried out in two different ways to check for consistency. Our analys… Show more

“…Transition dipole matrix elements * s.l.cornish@durham.ac.uk are fundamental properties of atoms as well as being crucial parameters for determining, for example, the blackbody radiation shift of atoms which is often a limiting systematic uncertainty in atomic clocks [27]. A number of discrepancies between experimental results and between theory and experiment have been pointed out in the literature [28][29][30][31] recently, giving particular importance to further benchmark tests.…”

“…Experimental determination of this ratio is also of particular interest due to discrepancy between theoretical and experimental values in Ba + discussed in Refs. [29,30]. We carry out a benchmark comparison with theoretical calculations of the Cs ratio, testing the methodology for determining theory uncertainties.…”

“…This ratio is in agreement with previous results from lifetime measurements [50], but with an error bar reduced by more than a factor of 10. Experimental determination of this ratio is also of particular interest due to discrepancy between theoretical and experimental values in Ba + discussed in [29,30]. We carry out a benchmark comparison with theoretical calculations of the Cs ratio, testing the methodology for determining theory uncertainties.…”

“…The ion has been drawing the attention of theorists and experimentalists over the last two decades or so. The recent theoretical and experimental ventures [1,2,9] prove its extant significance and challenges in advancing science and technologies. The laser used to control the ion for experimental purposes shifts (Stark shift) energy levels of the ions.…”
