Measurements of the branching ratios for 6P1/2 decays in Ba+138

Abstract: Measurement of the branching ratios for 6P 1/2 decays to 6S 1/2 and 5D 3/2 in 138 Ba + are reported with the decay probability from 6P 1/2 to 5D 3/2 measured to be p = 0.268177 ± (37)stat − (20)sys. This result differs from a recent report by 12σ. A detailed account of systematics is given and the likely source of the discrepancy is identified. The new value of the branching ratio is combined with a previous experimental results to give a new estimate of τ = 7.855(10) ns for the 6P 1/2 lifetime. In addition, r… Show more

“…The value of 459.1614(28) THz is in excellent agreement with theory and is a crucial determination for realizing an accurate representation of ∆α 0 (ω) over a large wavelength range as proposed in [15]. Given the inconsistency of estimated values for 6P 3/2 r 5D 5/2 , it is desirable to remeasure the P 3/2 branching ratios as noted in [15,18] and plans for this are already in progress. With the discrepancy resolved, ∆α 0 (ω) will be determined with inaccuracies below 0.5% for wavelengths 700 nm.…”

“…Transition dipole matrix elements * s.l.cornish@durham.ac.uk are fundamental properties of atoms as well as being crucial parameters for determining, for example, the blackbody radiation shift of atoms which is often a limiting systematic uncertainty in atomic clocks [27]. A number of discrepancies between experimental results and between theory and experiment have been pointed out in the literature [28][29][30][31] recently, giving particular importance to further benchmark tests.…”

“…Experimental determination of this ratio is also of particular interest due to discrepancy between theoretical and experimental values in Ba + discussed in Refs. [29,30]. We carry out a benchmark comparison with theoretical calculations of the Cs ratio, testing the methodology for determining theory uncertainties.…”
