Increased changes in the climate and ecosystems call for a sustainable economic development, where economic growth should be compatible with the environment goals. In order to do this, it is urgent to find new ways of life and new production systems that make our ecological footprint compatible with global sustainability. The concept of the circular economy has brought relevant contributions to this problem. The central objective of the study presented here is to highlight the main insights presented through scientific literature about the concept of the circular economy within the European Union. In practice, the intention is to show what has already been done about this topic and what can/should be implemented in the future. To achieve these objectives, 144 articles were considered from the Web of Science (Core Collection) for the topics “circular economy” and “European Union”. These documents were, firstly, analysed through a proper literature review and later explored through bibliometric analysis, considering bibliographic data and the VOSviewer software. As the main findings have revealed, the increased importance of this concept within the European Union is recognized. However, this paper also identifies several challenges in the literature, namely the concentration of the identified publications in certain countries, organizations, and authors.

The scarcity of natural resources and the generation of waste without adequate disposal are a worldwide concern related to the linear production model.These characteristics are present in the wood panel production. Faced with this problem, the present study aimed to identify in the literature, circular economy (CE) practices in the waste management of wood panel production processes and the possibilities for implementing new practices that incorporate circularity concepts. A systematic search was conducted to select the most relevant work on the theme. A search was done using the ScienceDirect, Web of Science, and Scopus databases by combining the following keywords: “Circular Economy” (and its possible variations), “Wood-based Panel”, and “Wood Waste”. The results evidenced circular economy practices on waste management already being used by the wood panel industry, besides potential practices to increase circularity. The changes go towards sustainable manufacturing and responsible consumption, which aims to “ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns”. Opportunities range from the extraction of raw materials to the disposal of wood panel waste at the end-of-life. The circular economy model is still recent and the process of transitioning is in its initial phase, as well as scientific research on the theme, mainly regarding the wood panel industry. Studies addressing the circular economy and wood panels are not yet widespread, pointing to a gap yet to be explored. The bibliographic review allowed identifying the existence of potential applications of circular economy in the wood panel industry; yet, this piece of research points to a broad field of exploration.

Bioenergy carbon emissions footprint considering the biogenic carbon and secondary effects

The sustainability of bioenergy is varying on a case-by-case basis. It considerably depends on the source of biomass, management practices (plantation, harvesting, conversion technologies, supply chain, etc.) as well as the assessment boundary and assumptions. This study summarises the carbon emissions footprint (CF) flow of bioenergy by considering the possible sources and system boundary, particularly on the CF of biogenic carbon and secondary effects. The assessment framework has been applied to a demonstrated case study identifying the upper limits of global warming potential of biogenic carbon emission (GWP bio) and secondary effects contribution where the bioenergy is still superior to the coal, natural gas and gasoline. The circumstances where the other energy source alternatives could have a lower CF than bioenergy are highlighted. For example, coal and natural gas are the selection (lower CF) if the bioelectricity is subjected to the GWP bio higher than 0.57-0.74 and 0.18-0.34. CF of bioheat is higher than the heat generated by natural gas when the GWP bio is more than 0.04-0.40. Gasoline is the selection when the GWP bio of biofuel is higher than 0.12-0.42. The validity of carbon neutrality assumption of bioenergy possesses a more decisive role in the overall selection of bioenergy compared to the assessed secondary effects such as soil organic carbon changes. This study emphasises the importance of a rigorous CF accounting for bioenergy to support the equitable decision making. Novelty Statement The novel contributions of this study are: (i) Summarising of the direct and secondary (soil organic carbon changesabove and belowground, biochar application) effects in accounting the CF for a comprehensive assessment framework. (ii) Identifying the CF, integrated with biogenic and non-biogenic accounting, of bioenergy from energy crops and waste/residual. (iii) Comparing the identified CF of bioenergy to the other energy alternatives (fossil-based).
