Dye-sensitized solar cells with natural dyes extracted from plant seeds

Abstract: The application of natural dyes extracted from plant seeds in the fabrication of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) has been explored. Ten dyes were extracted from different plant seeds and used as sensitizers for DSSCs. The dyes were characterized using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. DSSCs were prepared using TiO 2 and ZnO nanostructured mesoporous films. The highest conversion efficiency of 0.875 % was obtained with an allium cepa (onion) extract-sensitized TiO 2 solar cell. The process of TiO 2 -film sintering w… Show more

“…Several interesting tracks including natural dyes were explored: the molecules of the group tannins, anthocyanins, carotenoids or chalone and many other compounds sometimes extracted from plant seeds answered as celery or onion. Natural dyes are a less expensive alternative, faster, environmentally friendly and low energy consumption for photosensitive pigment cell (DSSC) compared to the ruthenium complex [17,21,32].…”

“…Carotenoids, chlorophyll, cyanidin, and delphinidin as well as cyanine and nasunin have been studied extensively. Although natural pigments are promising sensitizers in DSSCs, the efficiencies obtained with these pigments are considerably lower than those obtained with synthetic dyes [22][23][24][25][26][27][28].…”

“…In spite of these achievements cost and eco-friendly nature of these cells could be improved if the natural products were involved in construction of these cells. Cost effective ecofriendly dyes and electrolyte have been utilized in these solar cells and were successful in achieving better conversion efficiencies [8][9][10][11][12][13]. This paper presents a green approach to fabricate dye sensitized solar cells via biosynthesis of photoelectrode material.…”
