Honey is a natural food source that has been consumed by humans for thousands of years and has an important place in various cultures. Chestnut honey is an important type of honey produced in Düzce province. Determining the quality and purity of honey ensures that consumers have access to safe, high-quality honey. The control criteria for the suitability of honey for human health consumption are defined in the Turkish Food Codex Communiqué on Honey (2020/7). Düzce University Scientific and Technological Research Application and Research Center (DÜBİT) responds to requests for honey analysis for non-commercial, internal quality control purposes. In this study, the results of honey samples produced in the province of Düzce and analyzed in the laboratories of DÜBİT were examined according to the criteria of the Turkish Food Codex Communiqué on Honey and an evaluation of the results was carried out. According to the test results, 38%, 20% and 16% of the samples were found to be unsuitable for the quality criteria, especially for the sugar profile, conductivity and proline parameters, respectively. Additionally, pollen analysis of 13% of the honey samples revealed pollen densities that did not match the declared plant family. From a public health point of view, it is important to consume high-quality, reliable and natural honey products. Therefore, quality control of bee products should be carried out from the producer to the consumer.

Turkey, with its rich flora and high endemism proportion in a temperate zone, is highly favorable for beekeeping. In the studied area, two honeybees are present: Apis mellifera anatoliaca and the Yığılca local honeybee, which has been determined as local ecotype of anatoliaca in the Black Sea region. The main objective of this study was to determine the botanical sources of honey samples, which are produced by these two honeybees, from Akçakoca and Yığılca district. Chestnut and mad honey samples were obtained from local beekeepers. Pollen types in the honey samples were identified and determined the frequency classes. Castanea sativa was identified as the predominant pollen among the honey samples of Anatolian honeybee; these samples were classified as monofloral honey. Besides, Rhododendron ponticum and Lysimachia verticillaris pollens were found to be the important minor pollens in the mad honey samples of Anatolian honeybee. Mad honey samples from the Yığılca local honeybee were a multifloral honey and included Rhododendron ponticum and five other pollens as important minor pollen. In addition, physicochemical analyses were also performed. The honey samples gathered from the Yığılca district were deemed acceptable. On the other hand, the honey samples from the Akçakoca district were found acceptable except for moisture content. Also, 104 plant specimens were collected around beehives and 54 taxa were reported as melliferous plants. The Sorensen similarity coefficient, calculating among the melliferous plants of two localities (Akçakoca and Yığılca), was 51.85%. Diversity of melliferous plants was also higher in Yığılca than in Akçakoca.

The aim of this study is to determine the plant species preferred by Apis mellifera L., which is a valuable genotype in terms of vitality and high honey production. For this purpose, seven honey samples from Yığılca region in Düzce (Turkey) were examined for pollen analysis. As a result of the pollen analysis on these samples, it was determined that Yığılca local honeybee use pollen grains of 43 different taxa from 26 families. Six samples of honey were unifloral (> 45% pollen of one taxon in sample) with four being unifloral for Rhododendron ponticum L. and two for Castanea sativa Mill. One sample of honey was classified as multifloral with the percentages of secondary and rare pollen groups. The honeys had contained 14 to 30 different types of pollen. The average number of pollen types per honey was 21. The dominant groups of pollen grains were determined as Rhododendron ponticum L. in 4 samples and Castanea sativa Mill. in 2 samples. Secondary pollen components were from 3 taxa: Fagus orientalis Lipsky, Rhododendron ponticum L. and Quercus L. sp. Four pollen types occurred as 'minor' types and pollen grains of 37 taxa were in rare quantities. Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Fagaceae, Lamiaceae and Rosaceae were the most represented families in honey samples.
