Dual use of carbon nanotube selective coatings in evacuated tube solar collectors

Abstract: Continuous carbon nanotube sheets spun from the side of vertically aligned forests were investigated as solar selective coatings in evacuated tube collectors for solar thermal applications and for Joule heating in the absence of solar radiation. Forests grown by chemical vapor deposition at various synthesis temperatures produced sheets with tunable thermal and optical properties. The sheets were laminated on miniature and regular size evacuated tube collectors and tested at 100 mW/cm 2 AM 1.5 solar illuminati… Show more

“…[38] Investigating the effect of using carbon nanotube selective coatings used in evacuated tube solar collectors  The carbon nanotube was proposed as an ideal solar selective coating for evacuated tube collectors as it had better absorption and lower reflection compared with common coatings. [39] Design and optimization of evacuated tube solar water heaters  Design of two innovative evacuated tube solar water heaters resulted in high heat collection rates of 11 MJ/m 2 . [40] Experimental analysis of evacuated tube solar water heaters  The performance of evacuated tube and flat plate domestic solar water heaters was compared.…”

“…The studies of carbon nanotube (CNT) structures, such as vertically aligned multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) arrays [1,2], coating of MWCNT mats [1,3], CNT forest [4,5], CNT honeycomb structures [6], filtrated CNT coating [7], spun CNT sheet [8], were commonly focused on the black color, low reflectance, and matt surface appearance.…”

“…Udorn et al reported that cells with average areas smaller than 30 μm 2 showed a higher total reflectance than as-synthesized CNT forest [6]. Martinez et al reported that densified spun CNT sheet has slightly higher reflectance compared to non-densified spun CNT sheet, probably due to smoother surface [8].…”

“…The use of renewable energy sources is an optimal solution to overcome these challenges. Solar energy has the greatest potential of the available renewable energies as, properly managed, it could provide enough energy to exceed the total estimated lifetime of fossil fuel resources in a single year [1,2]. The direct absorption solar collector (DASC) concept is an interesting alternative to improve the efficiency of collecting solar energy and converting it into useful energy [3].…”
