Dual‐band and enhanced‐isolation MIMO antenna with L‐shaped meta‐rim extended ground stubs for 5G mobile handsets

Abstract: A novel compact planar dual‐band multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna with four radiating elements for 5G mobile communication is proposed. Each radiating element has a planar folded monopole, which is surrounded by L‐shaped meta‐rim extended ground stubs. The compact folded arms act as the main radiating elements, while combined with the L‐shaped meta‐rim stubs, the proposed antenna forms multiple resonances so as to achieve dual‐band coverage. The simulated and measured results show that the propose… Show more

“…A semi-ring slot Yagi-like MIMO antenna (Jehangir & Sharawi, 2017) with a compact complementary slot reflector element has been proposed without having a specific decoupling structure for MC reduction. Similarly, many designs have been reported in the literature (Abed, 2018;Duan et al, 2019;Ekrami & Jam, 2018;Jin et al, 2019;Malik et al, 2015;Sipal et al, 2018), which does not require any additional decoupling mechanism/structure to achieve the necessary isolation. Self-decoupled X-shaped arms etched on the square-shaped substrate (H. as represented in Figure 19a will show ultra-high isolation having orthogonal modes while in another case, two MTM-inspired monopole antennas (Jiang.…”

“…Thus, the antenna should also be able to provide multifunctioning to meet the new challenging while maintaining the other standards. In the last decade, several antennas have been reported to cover the sub 6 GHz operating band [22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29]. In [22], dual band antenna with a panel size of 140x70 mm 2 is proposed.…”

“…The isolation of greater than -15 dB is achieved with a maximum efficiency of more than 70%. Similarly, another dual band antenna with a panel and antenna element size of 130 x70 mm 2 and 18 x 7.7 mm 2 , respectively is proposed in [25]. The minimum isolation of -12 dB is achieved with a maximum efficiency of more than 63% within the operating band.…”

“…In most of the MIMO designs the mutual coupling is just near acceptable value . To improve these MIMO parameters, several techniques have been proposed such as using slots on ground plane, T‐shaped slot impedance transformer, modified ground structure, use of Metamaterial (MTM) structures, use of neutralization line structure, and so on. Most of the today's smart phones consist of two MIMO antenna elements for 4G/4G LTE and WLAN services.…”
