Drug Resistance of Vibrio anguillarum Isolated from Ayu between 1989 and 1991.

Abstract: One hundred and fourteen strains of Vibrio anguillarum collected from cultured ayu Plecoglossus altivelis between 1989 and 1991 were studied for their sensitivities to 10 chemotherapeutants. Among the drugs tested florfenicol (FF) was the most effective against all strains. Only one strain was found to be sensitive to all the drugs (ampicillin, chloramphenicol (CP), FF, furazolidone, kanamycin (KM), nalidixic acid, streptomycin (SM), sulfamonomethoxine (SA), tetracycline (TC), and trimethoprim (TMP).The remain… Show more

“…Aoki et al (1990). The transfer of furazolidone and nitrofurantoin resistance determinants from luminous vibrios to the recipient E. coli was not observed, which corroborate the observations of Zhao et al (1992). It is well known that surfaces with high bacterial densities are sites where plasmid transfer is most likely to occur.…”

“…Nine ml each of recipient culture was transferred to a series of sterile flatbottomed mating flasks of 100 ml capacity. The number of recipient cells in LB medium was determined on spread plates with bromothymol blue lactose nutrient (BLN) agar (Zhao et al 1992) containing 0.35% sodium chloride (NaCl). After 5 min, one ml each of donor cultures were introduced into the respective mating flasks and mixed gently.…”

“…On the contrary, respective MIC values for FLO against the two aforementioned pathogens were considerably lower (0.2-0.8 and 0.2-0.6 lg mL )1 for V. anguillarum and P. damsela subsp. piscicida, respectively) (Fukui et al, 1987;Zhao et al, 1992;Kim and Aoki, 1993), indicating a higher efficacy of FLO compared to THI for combating bacterial diseases.…”

“…The 67 kb virulence plasmid is known to encode an iron sequestering system [17] and some large plasmids have been shown to carry antibiotic resistance factors [9,10,12]. Further studies are needed to describe the function of these plasmids as well as the possible homology between them by using southern hybridization and similar techniques.…”

“…Although plasmids have been detected among several Vibrio species, including Vibrio vulnificus [2], Vibrio ordalii [3], Vibrio cholerae [4], Vibrio salmonicida [5], Vibriofischeri [6], and various other vibrios [7,8], Vibrio anguillarum is maybe the Vibrio species most extensively studied with respect to plasmids. This has been done for several reasons: from Japan, several authors have shown the involvement of large plasmids, MDa, in resistance to one or more antimicrobial drugs [9][10][11][12]. In serogroup 01, an approximately 67 kb (65-70 kb) plasmid has been demonstrated to be common among strains isolated from the kidney of dead fish [13][14][15].…”
