Drag Force Actuated Bistable Microswitches for Flow Sensing

Abstract: This paper presents bistable microswitches with Au contacts with the aim to combine them with artificial hairs for flow sensing. The Au contacts are applied on both ends of a silicon nitride beam, suspended by a torsional bar at its center. The beam is provided with electrodes for electrostatic actuation, which were used for characterization and can also be used for adaptive control of the mechanical properties of the flow sensor. The electrodes have been actuated in antiphase to drive the microswitch similarl… Show more

“…Several types of biomimetic flow-sensors can be found in literature incorporating various transduction mechanisms. These include piezoresistive sensing [3], capacitive sensing [4] and switching [5]. This paper describes the successful continuation of the fabrication and design of flow-sensor arrays with capacitive sensing [4] for reasons of high intrinsic sensitivity in combination with low power dissipation and promising performance.…”

“…Several research groups have focused on bistable MEMS, using either residual stress [13], buckled beams [14], [15], initially curved beams [16] or electrostatic forcing [17]. In this work, electrostatic forces are used to obtain bistability in our slider.…”
