This article presents an updated survey on research related to Ultra Wideband (UWB) communications, particularly that of impulse radio (IR) technology. In addition to the research, we survey UWB physical layer (PHY) specifications of the two existing standardsthe IEEE 802.15.6-2012 and the IEEE 802.15.4-2015 -as well as the leading global UWB spectrum regulatory limitations which have been updated recently. The latter standard including the UWB specifications was first published in 2007 and the latest revision dates to 2015. The focus in this article is the period from 2007 to 2015. Our purpose is to provide an in-depth survey with a clearly specified topic together with the standard specifications and the related regulatory restrictions. Additionally, the last part of the article discusses the possibilities of increasing the current IR-UWB data rates to meet increasing future demands.

Based on RF identification (RFID), sensor technology and other smart technologies, many objects surrounding us will be connected into networks and a variety of applications are present [1].The term IoT was initially proposed as the extended concept of objects with RFID technology. Later on, more and more technologies such as sensors, actuators, GPS devices and mobile devices are embedded into IoT technology [2]. China Communications Standards Association (CCSA) gives one definition of IoT: A network, which can collect information from the physical world or control the physical world objects through various deployed devices with capability of perception, computation, execution and communication, and support communications between human and things or between things by transmitting, classifying and processing information [3]. According to this definition, the IoT system could be divided into many subsystems. The information from things will be directly collected by sensor network and processed by computing system where wireless or wireline communication is used to transfer and share all the information between every node. For example, when IoT is used for intelligent transportation systems, the transportation agencies will be Abstract: This paper reviews recent advances in radar sensor design for low-power healthcare, indoor real-time positioning and other applications of IoT. Various radar front-end architectures and digital processing methods are proposed to improve the detection performance including detection accuracy, detection range and power consumption. While many of the reported designs were prototypes for concept verification, several integrated radar systems have been demonstrated with reliable measured results with demo systems. A performance comparison of latest radar chip designs has been provided to show their features of different architectures. With great development of IoT, short-range low-power radar sensors for healthcare and indoor positioning applications will attract more and more research interests in the near future.

This paper presents a multicarrier 60GHz transmitter for distance measurement (ranging) in an indoor wireless localization system, achieving mm-precision with high update rate. The architecture comprises a baseband subcarrier generator, an upconverter, and a power amplifier. There are three key innovations, all stemming from careful hardware-algorithm co-design: 1. efficient frequency planning of the 6GHz-wide band; 2. power-efficient multicarrier signal generation by means of digital frequency divisions exploiting the phase-based time-of-arrival ranging algorithm; and 3. PAPR reduction to enable efficient operation of the power amplifier. By implementing these key techniques, 0.7-2.7mm precision is achieved over 5m measured distance with 5.4µs symbol duration. During operation, the core digital subcarrier generator generates 16 non-equidistant subcarriers from a 3GHz input clock, while consuming an average power of 1.8mW out of 0.9V supply. The upconverter and the power amplifier altogether consume around 127mW. The total area of the transmitter is 1.1mm2 . The chip is fabricated in a 40nm general purpose CMOS process.P. Indirayanti, T.
