Double phase estimator: new unambiguous binary offset carrier tracking algorithm

Abstract: Several new global navigation satellite system modulations adopt a binary offset carrier (BOC) subcarrier to shape the signal spectrum, increase the frequency separation and improve the tracking performance. BOC modulated signals are, however, characterised by ambiguous multi-peaked correlation functions and several techniques have been proposed in the literature to solve the problem of locking into secondary peaks. In this study, a novel unambiguous BOC tracking technique, the double phase estimator (DPE), is… Show more

“…As the upper sideband only contains half the power of BOC signal, the (C/N 0 ) U loss is initially 3 dB. The front-end and decimation filters remove the high-order frequency components, which induces a loss of at least 10 log 10 (8/π 2 )≈0.91 dB [6]. Therefore (C/N 0 ) U = (C/N 0 ) R − 3.91 dB, where (C/N 0 ) R is the BOC signal carrier-to-noise ratio.…”

“…5,6 In order to tackle this problem, some unambiguous acquisition and tracking approaches have been proposed. Among them, there are four representative solutions referred to as BPSK-like technique, 7 bump-jumping technique, 8 double-estimator technique, [9][10][11][12][13] and side-peaks cancellation technique. 14 The earliest BPSK-like idea was described as the sum of two binary BPSK signals with carrier frequency symmetrically positioned on each side of BOC carrier frequency.…”
