Dosimetric parameters of the new design 103Pd brachytherapy source based on Monte Carlo study

Abstract: In this study version 5 of the MCNP photon transport simulation was used to calculate the dosimetric parameters for new palladium brachytherapy source design following AAPM Task Group No. 43U1 report. The internal source components include four resin beads of 0.6 mm diameters with (103)Pd uniformly absorbed inside and one cylindrical copper marker with 1.5 mm length. The resin beads and marker are then encapsulated within 0.8 mm in diameter and 4.5 mm long cylindrical capsule of titanium. The dose rate constan… Show more

“…In this work, the MCNP5 v1.51 Monte Carlo code [12][13][14][15][16][17][18] was employed to simulate the radiation transport of electron beams through the Siemens ONCOR Linac (Siemens Co. Germany) treatment head and water phantom based on the dimensions and materials provided by the manufacturer. The accelerator exit window, primary collimators, flattening filter, monitor chambers, Y-jaws, and X-jaws were simulated in the geometric section of the code.…”

“…where D(r,/2) and D(1,/2) are the dose rates measured at distances of r and 1 cm, respectively, along the transverse axis of the source. G L (r,) is known as the geometry function that takes into account the effect of the distribution of radioactive material inside the capsule on the dose distribution [20]. The anisotropy function was calculated following the TG-43 recommendation as:…”

“…This can either be seen as the lipid entering β' or β i form, away from the metastable α (spherical shape). Considering temperatures kept above 70°C it can be assumed particle exhibiting the stable β i , however this can only be confirmed with further analysis of the particle [30][31][32].…”
