Майже 93 % побутових відходів України вивозять на сміттєзвалища та полігони, понад 2 % спалюють, а тільки 4,5 % переробляють. Результати досліджень свідчать про недосконалість наявної структури системи поводження з твердими побутовими відходами в Україні на регіональному рівні. З'ясовано, що наслідком захоронення відходів в Україні стала значна кількість екологічних проблем, зокрема забруднення підземних вод фільтратом (способом інфільтрації забруднених вод у підземні водоносні горизонти) та міграція забруднювальних компонентів разом з підземним, наземним та надземним потоками. Отже, захоронення відходів на звалищах зумовлює низку екологічних ризиків та впливає на довкілля та здоров'я людей. Оцінено вплив звалищ твердих побутових відходів на гідрохімічний режим прилеглих територій (на прикладі полігону ТПВ Житомирської територіальної громади). Охарактеризовано закономірності та проаналізовано показники якості води криниць і поверхневих водних об'єктів, які знаходяться в зоні впливу полігону. Виявлено, що вміст хімічних речовин у воді перевищує допустимі значення нормативних вимог до якості води. Результати дослідження свідчать про необхідність суворого контролю над станом сміттєзвалищ. Аналіз інформації щодо впливу звалищ твердих побутових відходів на гідрохімічний режим прилеглих територій може привести до встановлення нових або вдосконалення наявних інженерних рішень у сфері охорони довкілля, а також дасть змогу конкретизувати зону впливу звалищ на довкілля та санітарно-захисних зон полігонів твердих побутових відходів. Оцінювання впливу звалищ твердих побутових відходів на гідрохімічний режим прилеглих територій (зокрема на воду криниць і поверхневих водойм) може стати важливою ланкою моніторингу впливу звалищ на довкілля.

The most acceptable way to prevent and eliminate negative phenomena arising from devastating landscapes is phytomelioration. To assess the suitability of the landfill's surface for phytomelioration measures, it is necessary to determine the species composition, physiological stability, density, and completeness of the tree stand (in case of the tree species development) already developing as a result of natural overgrowth. The present work examines the ecological succession of three large urban landfills within the Western Forest Steppe of Ukraine -Lviv, Ternopil, and Lutsk. It was established that the maximum phytomass is characteristic of the gentle slopes of landfills with relatively stable moisture index, and developed soil, which gives reason to attribute the plant groups to the endoecogenesis stage while there are no garbage dumping processes. Three stages of overgrowth were identified for all landfills -syngenetic succession, initial endoecogenetic succession, and mature endoecogenetic succession. The taxonomic structure of the flora of the urban landfills of the Western Forest Steppe is represented by the divisions Magnoliophyta, Pinophyta, Polypodiophyta, Bryophyta, and the classes Magnoliopsida, Liliopsida, Pinopsida, Equisetopsida, Polytrichopsida. The phytomeliorative efficiency of vegetation at solid waste landfills shows that the surface of landfills in the Western Forest Steppe is dominated by stunted plants and the phytomelioration coefficient is low. Thus, the surface of the landfill is suitable for phytomelioration and reclamation works and landfill decommissioning. The vegetation in the landfills within the Western Forest Steppe of Ukraine is characterized by the rich species composition of the grass cover near the bottom and its almost absence at the top (southern slope). The transforming function of adapted plant groups leads to significant reduce of the intensity of denudation processes of technogenic substrates, and initiate soil-forming processes in them. The aim of the work is to establish the peculiarities of successional processes in different types of landfills of the Western Forest Steppe of Ukraine, depending on various technogenic factors. It was found that large landfills have the largest species composition – Lviv – 30 species, Ternopil – 20, Lutsk – 19. Small landfills – Lavrykiv – 10 species, Vereshchytsya – 11 species have the smallest species composition. Succession stages (syngenetic, initial endo-ecogenetic, mature endo-ecogenetic) are described at each investigated landfill, and projective coverage is calculated. It was established that the highest coefficients of Jaccard’s floristic similarity are characteristic to the investigated areas of landfills where there is no waste dumping, or it is only in certain areas (the second phase of dumping). The average coefficient of floristic similarity of all investigated landfills isKj=0.29.
