This study aimed to assess lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes in goats naturally infected with Babesia ovis. Red blood cell count (RBC), hemoglobin (Hb) concentration, packed cell volume (PCV), malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT) activities and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were determined in 15 goats naturally infected with B. ovis as well as same number of healthy goats. The parasitological diagnosis was confirmed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis by amplifying a partial 18S rRNA gene sequence of B. ovis. Percentage of parasitemia varied from 0.01 to 1%. The activities of erythrocyte GSH-Px, SOD, CAT and TAC were significantly lower (p<0.05) in the infected goats than in healthy ones. MDA concentration in erythrocytes of infected goats was significantly higher in infected goats than in healthy ones (p<0.05). Severity of parasitemia showed a positive correlation with the MDA and negative correlation with PCV, SOD, CAT, GSH-Px and TAC. Also, MDA was negatively correlated with PCV, SOD, CAT, GSH-Px and TAC. The results of this study suggested that oxidative damage to RBCs may contribute to the pathogenesis of anemia in caprine babesiosis.

In Turkey, canine hepatozoonosis is an emerging infection with a large number of cases detected during the past five years. In the present study, serum zinc, copper and iron concentrations of dogs infected with Hepatozoon canis were measured for the first time. Compared to the controls (n = 10), serum zinc and iron concentrations in infected animals (n = 14) decreased significantly (p < 0.05 and p < 0.01, respectively), whereas the concentrations of copper in diseased animals increased significantly (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the results of the present study indicate that Hepatozoon canis infection may cause alterations in serum zinc iron and copper concentrations. Furthermore, in the treatment of infected animals addition of zinc and iron to the ration of infected animals should be taken into consideration. Hepatozoonozis, dog, trace minerals

RESUMO:O Hepatozoon spp. é um protozoário, transmitido por artrópodes (carrapatos, ácaros, piolhos, entre outros) que podem atuar como hospedeiros definitivos, responsáveis por causar a Hepatozoonose. Os sinais clínicos incluem anorexia, mucosas pálidas, febre, poliúria, polidipsia, vômitos, diarréia, fraqueza, depressão, ataxia dos membros posteriores, emaciação e linfadenopatia periférica. O diagnóstico é feito pela da identificação dos gamontes em neutrófilos ou monócitos, podendo muitas vezes o parasita ser encontrado casualmente em cães sem sinais clínicos, reafirmando o relato em questão, onde o animal não apresentou a sintomatologia da doença, mas houve a identificação de gamontes em neutrófilos. O tratamento foi feito com a associação de dipropionato de imidocarb e doxiciclina como é preconizado na literatura. The diagnosis is made by identifying the gamontes in neutrophils or monocytes and the parasite can often be found casually in dogs with no clinical signs, reaffirming the case in question, where the animal did not show the symptoms of the disease, but there was the identification of gamontes in neutrophils. The treatment was done with the association of Imidocarb dipropionate and doxycycline.
