Abstract:Small-medium enterprises (SMEs) represent 90% of business globally. Digital Transformation (DT) affects SMEs differently from larger companies because although SMEs have more flexibility and agility for adapting to new circumstances, they also have more limited resources and specialization capabilities. Thus, it is fundamental to measure SMEs’ performance considering different perspectives. Here, we describe and analyze the state-of-the-art of DT in SMEs, focusing on performance measurement. We center on wheth… Show more

“…The standout advantage of the SDT framework for SMEs lies in its stakeholder-centric engagement. Unlike conventional digitalization efforts that may overlook the impact on people and the environment, the SDT framework prioritizes restructuring processes, enhancing human sustainability, and cultivating sustainable practices [51]. The proposal aligns seamlessly with stakeholder theory, ensuring active engagement and the satisfaction of diverse stakeholder needs [95].…”

This study presents a sustainable digital transformation framework to integrate sustainable practices into digital transformation initiatives within Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The methodology includes a literature review, a framework creation, and a case study with passive participation. The framework was structured to help industries implement responsible digitalization initiatives in five key stages: setting objectives, fostering stakeholder-focused engagement, defining sustainable objectives and dimensions, creating a sustainable model, and executing the project. Validating the proposal in the context of an SME allowed us to discern the tangible benefits of sustainability practices for the organization, further reinforcing the relevance and applicability of the framework. In conclusion, this research offers valuable information for SMEs considering starting a sustainable digitalization process.

“…Digital transformation is a change that arises from digital technology, while digitalization refers to converting information from analog to digital form and automating processes through technology (Hess et al, 2016). Thus, this research will consider digital transformation as a synonym for "digitalization," "digital innovation," and "digital transition" in line with (Costa-Melo et al, 2023).…”

“…The discontinuity between organizational innovation and digitalization makes it difficult for MSMEs to compete in a dynamic business environment. Every MSMEs needs digital transformation to compete (Costa-Melo et al, 2023).…”
This study aims to examine the relationship of foresight capability to the innovation performance of SMEs by using digital transformation as a mediating variable. This study uses a quantitative research method. Data collection was carried out through a structured offline questionnaire. The technique of determining the sampling is done by using purposive sampling. The population in this study were SMEs originating from the West Java region, with a total of 187 questionnaires collected. This research uses structural equation modeling (SEM) to test the hypothesis. This study proposes ten hypotheses, of which seven direct effect hypotheses and three hypotheses test the mediating effect. The study's results found that foresight capability can affect product innovation performance. The effect of foresight capability (network and analysis) can affect digital transformation, but the time horizon cannot affect digital transformation. Digital transformation can affect the performance of MSMEs product innovation. This study found that digital transformation can partially mediate network relationships and analysis on product innovation performance and cannot mediate time horizon relationships on product innovation performance. The findings of this study enrich the foresight literature, digital transformation, and innovation performance of MSMEs products.
Digital transformation (DT) and Big Data Analytics Capabilities (BDAC) enable SMEs to adapt to rapidly changing markets, innovate, and maintain relevance in the digital age. This research explores the impact of DT on SME performance through the lens of BDAC and innovation, from a multi-methods approach and applying the dynamic capabilities view. It asserts that simply investing in DT doesn't ensure enhanced performance. Analyzing 183 Spanish SMEs from various sectors, the study highlights the need for creating specific conditions that enable DT to positively impact performance. The integration of PLS-SEM and fsQCA methodologies provides a comprehensive analysis of BDAC as pivotal in optimizing SME performance through DT, emphasizing the necessity of strategic alignment with innovation. This nuanced approach, combining the predictive power of PLS-SEM and the configurational insights of fsQCA, demonstrates that investment in DT alone is insufficient without fostering conditions conducive to innovation. Our empirical insights offer actionable guidance for managers utilizing BDA or contemplating technological investments to elevate firm performance which go in the direction of increasing their innovation capabilities. Additionally, these findings equip policymakers with a nuanced understanding, enabling the design of tailored measures promoting DT in SMEs anchored in the nuances of BDAC and innovation capabilities.
