Do the adiponectin and leptin levels in preterm and term breast milk samples relate to infants’ short-term growth?

Abstract: Adiponectin and leptin are involved in appetite control and body weight regulation. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between breast milk adipokine levels and short-term growth of preterm and term infants. Thirty-one preterm (median=35.3 weeks) and 34 term (median=38.7 weeks) infants were enrolled. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect adipokines in mature milk. Infant growth was followed during the first 3 months. Although weight gain in the first month was insufficient, positive linear gro… Show more

“…In regression analysis, parity was found to be an important predictor of ghrelin level in pre-feed breast milk. Many maternal factors are demonstrated to influence breast milk nutrient composition, including the stage of lactation, the genetic background of the mother, parity, age and health status (38,(40)(41)(42) . Increased breast milk ghrelin levels promote food intake (25) , and parity has been suggested to be a risk factor for the development of obesity (43) .…”

“…However, little is known about leptin and preterm infants and the optimal leptin intake. A study showed that adiponectin might affect short-term growth, but this was not seen with leptin [ 59 ]. Other results revealed that both hormones affected physical growth outcomes in preterm infants [ 60 ].…”

“…Collecting samples in the morning is a common sampling practice, and sometimes involves maternal fasting overnight [31,83,96]. Alternatively, samples might be collected in the morning and/or 1.5 h after the first breastfeed, as well as after 1.5-2 h of maternal fasting as this practice suggested as a control for diurnal variation [63].…”
