This study investigated the predominant leafhopper and treehopper (Hemiptera, Auchenorrhyncha) species in Citrus Variegated Chlorosis (CVC)-affected citrus agroecosystems in Argentina, their seasonal fluctuation, and their potential role as vectors of Xylella fastidiosa Wells et al., using molecular methods for detection. More than 6 000 Auchenorrhyncha were collected from three citrus agroecosystems over a period of 3 years using yellow sticky traps and entomological nets. Cicadellidae and Membracidae were the most abundant families. Of the 43 species identified, five were predominant in citrus orchards, and three were predominant in weeds surrounding citrus plants. All predominant species and another four non-predominant species tested positive for X. fastidiosa in PCR and real-time PCR assays. In a transmission assay, Dechacona missionum (Berg), Tapajosa rubromarginata (Signoret), and Cyphonia clavigera (Fabricius) transmitted X. fastidiosa successfully. Scaphytopius bolivianus Oman and Frequenamia spiniventris (Linnavuori) populations increased once (during the summer), possibly due to favorable weather conditions, and Bucephalogonia xanthophis (Berg), Molomea lineiceps Young, and T. rubromarginata populations increased twice a year: once in summer and once in winter, coinciding with the increase in early citrus shoots (flush). Among the X. fastidiosa-positive species, those with the higher population densities during the sprouting period, where trees are highly susceptible to infection, must be considered as most relevant vectors of CVC in the citrus-growing areas in Argentina.

Sharpshooters (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Cicadellinae) and spittlebugs (Hemiptera: Aphrophoridae: Aphrophorinae) have a worldwide distribution and are often associated with many crops. Because the geographic range of sharpshooters and spittlebugs often overlaps with the range of the plant pathogenic bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, the importance of these groups of insects in spreading X. fastidiosa rises to the level of a major socioeconomic problem. Managing diseases caused by X. fastidiosa is challenging for several reasons. First, multiple sequence types of the pathogen have been identified, with sequence type affecting host plant specificity. Second, multiple vector species may be present in an agroecosystem, and the host range of vector species is often broad. Although multiple vector control options such as biological, chemical, physical and cultural controls have been described, disease control programs must take into account biological and ecological parameters of locally dominant X. fastidiosa sequence types and vector species to develop suitable control strategies. Our review demonstrates how fundamental principles of vector reproductive biology, behaviour, nutrition and population and community ecology have influenced research on insect vectors and provides insights into priority research areas.

Paspalum notatum é a planta que mais se destaca desse agrupamento, já que ela abriga a maior quantidade das espécies de cigarrinhas coletadas nas plantas infestantes P. hysterophorus e R. sativus tornam-se importantes por também terem apresentado elevado número de cigarrinhas, acima de 46%, mas também por serem plantas hospedeiras de X. fastidiosa, como demonstrado por Muller (2013), que detectou a presença da bactéria em plantas dessas espécies coletadas em pomares de ameixeiras localizados nos municípios de Jarinú, SP e Videira, SC e pelo sucesso que a autora obteve em inoculações mecânicas de R. sativus com isolados da estirpe de X. fastidiosa de ameixeira, o que demonstra que essas plantas podem contribuir consideravelmente para a disseminação da EFA, seja por manter as cigarrinhas presentes, ou por servirem como eventuais fontes de inóculo da bactéria.…”

Potential hopper vectors (Hemiptera: Cercopidae and Cicadellidae) and weeds associated with the epidemiology of Plum Leaf ScaldPlum Leaf Scald (PLS) is one of the major diseases that impair the production of plums in Brazil, caused by the xylem-limited bacterium Xylella fastidiosa (Wells), whose potential vectors in plums are sharpshooter leafhoppers (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae, Cicadellinae) and spittlebugs (Hemiptera: Cercopidae). A number of leafhoppers and and spittlebugs have been reported in Brazilian plum orchards, but their host plants and role in PLS epidemiology are largely unknown. The goal of this research was to investigate the association of potential hopper vectors with plum trees and weedy plants in the ground vegetation of orchards, in order to determine key vector species and weeds involved in PLS epidemiology. Therefore, a hopper survey was carried out in three plum orchards in the municipality of Paranapanema, SP, from September/2012 to April/2013, using three sampling methods: a) sweep net on weed species of the ground vegetation; b) yellow sticky cards placed on the plum canopy at 0.5 and 2 m above ground; and c) visual inspections of plum trees and some weeds. The collected hoppers were sorted and identified in the laboratory, and the data were submitted to faunistic analysis. To check if the weeds were hosts of plum strains of X. fastidiosa, bacterial suspensions were mechanically inoculated in Bidens pilosaL., Parthenium hysterophorus L., Raphanus sativus L., Euphorbia heterophylla L., Sida rhombifolia L., Solanum americanum Mill. Lantana camara L. The plants were assayed for infection of X. fastidiosa by PCR and culture at 2 months after inoculation. Transmission assays of X. fastidiosa from plum to weeds were carried out using two sharpshooter vectors, Sibovia sagata (Signoret) e Macugonalia cavifrons (Stål). The sweep net samplings revealed 72 species of seven hopper families (Achilidae, Cercopidae, Cicadellidae, Delphacidae, Derbidae, Dictyopharidae, Flatidae and Membracidae) associated with eight dicotyledoneous and seven monocotyledoneous weeds in the ground vegetation, with prevalence of Cicadellidae and Cercopidae. Among the potential hopper vectors, the spittlebug Deois schach (Fabricius) and the sharpshooter Plesiommata corniculata Young were predomimant species on the weed species, suggesting that they may play a key role in a possible primary spread of X. fastidiosa from weeds to plum. Paspalum notatum Flügge, Parthenium hysterophorus L. and Raphanus sativus L. were the weed species with the largest hopper populations. The sharpshooters Acrogonia citrina Marucci & Cavichioli e Oncometopia facialis (Signoret) were prevalent species trapped by the yellow sticky cards on the plum canopy, indicating that they may be involved in secondary spread of X. fastidiosa between plum trees in that region.
