Diversity and indicator species in the cerrado biome, Brazil

Abstract: The Cerrado biome has high species richness, endemism and spatial heterogeneity. Knowing the main characteristics and peculiarities of the flora is essential to adequately protect the species richness of the Cerrado. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze the species richness, alpha diversity and beta diversity of four vegetation types in the Paracatu River Basin (15°30'/19°30'S and 45°10'/47°30'W), Paracatu-MG. The four vegetation types cerrado (stricto sensu, "cerradão" or Savannah woodland, d… Show more

“…Tropical zones provide an optimal environment for studies on specificity patterns of ecological interactions (Novotný & Basset, ). The Neotropical savanna (Brazilian Cerrado), for example, is a biome with a very diverse vegetation (Simon et al ., ), which influences the distribution of phytophagous insects and their guilds (Leal et al ., ; Ferreira et al ., ). Despite this variety of resources to be explored, the plant community of Neotropical savannas shows high levels of sclerophylly (Ribeiro & Fernandes, ; Silva & Batalha, ).…”

“…Formed by a mosaic of different types, the Cerrado biome has high species richness, endemism, and very heterogeneous formation (Ferreira, et al, 2017), with different species of phytogeographic domains. In Piauí and Maranhão the Cerrado sensu lato is presented in the form of the following phytophysiognomies: dirty field cerrado, field cerrado, cerrado sensu stricto and cerradão (Castro & Martins, 1999).…”

“…The Brazilian Cerrado (also referred to as Brazilian Savanna) biome comprises the most extensive woodland-savanna in South America, originally occupying more than two million km 2 , predominantly in the central region of the country (IBGE 2004). A vegetation mosaic ranging from grassland to forest formations with high alpha and beta diversity characterizes the biome (Ribeiro & Walter 2008;Ferreira et al 2017). Due to its high species richness, high level of endemism, and rapid loss of habitats, especially due to conversion to agricultural use, the Cerrado is considered a global hotspot for biodiversity conservation (Strassburg et al 2017).…”
