En Argentina gran parte de la actividad de producción de ganado de carne se desarrolla en zonas áridas-semiáridas (75% del territorio continental) y se basa en el pastoreo de la vegetación nativa. Así, los pastizales naturales son importantes tanto como factor de producción, como por ser reservorio de biodiversidad cumpliendo un servicio ecológico o ambiental con el consecuente impacto socio-económico. Específicamente en la región de estudio (sur de la provincia fitogeográfica del Monte), Pappophorum vaginatum es una especie clave por ser una de las pocas gramíneas perennes nativas abundante en la primavera y verano. No obstante esta situación, su exposición al sobrepastoreo la ha convertido en una especie decreciente. Por ello, el incremento de la abundancia de P. vaginatum en los pastizales sería importante no sólo para aumentar la disponibilidad de forraje para el ganado sino también para recuperar y mantener la biodiversidad. En esta investigación se realizaron estudios en condiciones semicontroladas (Facultad de Ciencias Agrarias y Forestales, La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina) y a campo (Chacra Experimental Patagones-MA, Buenos Aires, Argentina). Los objetivos fueron: 1) explorar, recolectar y evaluar germoplasma nativo de P. vaginatum de la región del Monte, y crear y mantener una colección abierta; 2) determinar variabilidad para (a) germinación, (b) vigor de planta, (c) producción y calidad de forraje, (d) producción y calidad de semillas y (e) capacidad de resiembra entre y dentro de poblaciones; y 3) estimar parámetros genéticos en caracteres de interés agronómico para la mejora de la implantación y de la producción y calidad de forraje y semillas. Con las semillas de las poblaciones recolectadas (n=6) se conformó una colección de trabajo. De los estudios en condiciones semicontroladas, se observó variabilidad en la respuesta germinativa y en la emergencia, y un efecto positivo de la luz y de la ausencia de las coberturas (lemma y pálea) sobre la germinación de las cariópsides de las poblaciones estudiadas. El vigor de planta tuvo variabilidad intrapoblacional, aunque algunos caracteres correlacionados también presentaron variabilidad interpoblacional. Del estudio a campo, se observó variabilidad inter e intrapoblacional, valores altos de heredabilidad y una relación entre el coeficiente de variabilidad genético y el ambiental mayor a 1 para varios caracteres vinculados a: la implantación, la producción y calidad de forraje y semillas, y la capacidad de resiembra. También se observaron asociaciones entre dichos caracteres. Por lo expuesto, los factores luz y coberturas de la cariópside deberían ser considerados al momento de manejar la implantación y resiembra natural de la especie. Por otra parte, tanto las expectativas de lograr algún avance genético como la posibilidad de diseñar estrategias de selección indirecta en un programa de selección de P. vaginatum serían promisorias para varios de los caracteres estudiados.
