Analysis of Genetic Parameters of Habanero Pepper (Capsicum chinense Jacq.) in the Yucatan, Mexico

Abstract: The variability and genetic parameters of seven agronomic characteristics were estimated for 11 genotypes, and high values of the phenotypic coefficient of variation (PCV) of capsaicin content (CC) were obtained. Heritability (h2) was high for yield per plant (YP; 0.98) and CC (0.93). The principal components analysis (PCA) revealed that the first three components explained 94.02% of the total variation; therefore, genotypes with higher YP values and fruit weight (FW) (AKN-08, ASBC… Show more

“…The fruit shape and the pericarp thickness are important traits for the classification of accessions, varieties and cultivars of peppers. The positive correlation between these characteristics can directly affect the flavoring compounds essential to the Capsicum fruits [59].…”

“…Disease severity index varied from 0% ('Adelina', 'Red Habanero', 'Red Chupetinho') to 75.0% ('Lemon Drop'). The coefficient of variance (CV) is the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean of a variable (Pena-Yam et al 2019). The coefficient of variation from the test results shows a low value of less than 20% (Gomez and Gomez 1987) on all variables except for the disease severity index (25.51%), which indicates that the test results are valid.…”

“…'Mayan Kisin' was the result of four selection cycles carried out on landraces collected in the region of Valladolid, in the state of Yucatan, Mexico. A study by Peña-Yam et al [13] estimated the genetic parameters of seven agronomic characteristics for 11 habanero pepper genotypes. The aim of the study was to select potential progenitors to produce F1 hybrids.…”
