SummaryThe use of medicinal plants by the general population is an old and still widespread practice, which makes studies of their mutagenicity essential. Rosmarinus officinalis, long used in folk medicine, is used as an antispasmodic in renal colic and dysmenorrhoea, in relieving respiratory disorders, to stimulate growth of hair and has choleretic, hepatoprotective and antitumerogenic activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clastogenic potential of the Rosmarinus officinalis hidro-alcoholic extract in vivo on bone marrow cells of Wistar rats by evaluating the induction of chromosome aberrations and micronuclei induction on polychromatic erythrocytes. The extract was administered by gavage at doses of 6.43, 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight. Experimental and control animals were submitted to euthanasia 24 h after the treatment. R. officinalis extract did not induce statistically significant increases in the average numbers of micronucleus or chromosome aberrations in the test systems employed.

The procedure for isolation of BA and its derivatives always involves extraction with various organic solvents such as ethanol, methanol, n ‐hexane, ethyl acetate, or methanol/dichloromethane (1:1), followed by separation using chromatography on, for example, silica gel or Sephadex LH‐20 . BA derivatives can be obtained by crystallization in methanol and are easily isolated from botanical sources as a consequence perhaps of their moderate polarity.…”

Betulinic acid (BA) is a lupane-type pentacyclic triterpene, distributed ubiquitously throughout the plant kingdom. BA and its derivatives demonstrate multiple bioactivities, particularly an antitumor effect. This review critically describes the recent research on isolation, synthesis, and derivatization of BA and its natural analogs betulin and 23-hydroxybetulinic acid. The subsequent part of the review focuses on the current knowledge of antitumor properties, combination treatments, and pharmacological mechanisms of these compounds. A 3D-QSAR analysis of 62 BA derivatives against human ovarian cancer A2780 is also included to provide information concerning the structure-cytotoxicity relationships of these compounds.

Aflatoxins (AF) are a major issue encountered in poultry farms, leading to much economic losses. The current trail is planned to determine the effects of AF (600ppb) and Rosemary essence (ROS) (500ppm), singly or in combination, on the visceral organ weights, some blood biochemical parameters and mortality percentage of broilers. A total of 240 unsexed Ross 308, were randomly allotted into 4 treatments with 3 replicates having 20 chicks each (Control; AF; ROS and AF+ROS). The broilers fed AF contaminated diet from beginning and showed characteristic effects of aflatoxicosis. The weight of spleen, and pancreas decreased and bursa and liver weights increased due to ingestion of AF. Serum levels of cholesterol, LDL and HDL and mortality is increased in aflatoxin fed broilers. The Rosemary could partially restore the adverse effects of AF to some extent and when alone added into the diet and showed good effects on reducing cholesterol, HDL, LDL and reduction number of dead birds, due to presence of essential oils and antioxidants activity in its content.
