The Pladias (Plant Diversity Analysis and Synthesis) Database of the Czech Flora and Vegetation was developed by the Pladias project team in 2014-2018 and has been continuously updated since then. The flora section of the database contains critically revised information on the Czech vascular flora, including 13.6 million plant occurrence records, which are dynamically displayed in maps, and data on 120 plant characteristics (traits, environmental associations and other information), divided into the sections: (1) Habitus and growth type, (2) Leaf, (3) Flower, (4) Fruit, seed and dispersal, (5) Belowground organs and clonality, (6) Trophic mode, (7) Karyology, (8) Taxon origin, (9) Ecological indicator values, (10) Habitat and sociology, (11) Distribution and frequency, and (12) Threats and protection. The vegetation section of the database contains information on Czech vegetation types extracted from the monograph Vegetation of the Czech Republic. The data are supplemented by national botanical bibliographies, electronic versions of the standard national flora and vegetation monographs, a database of more than 19,000 pictures of plant taxa and vegetation types, and digital maps (shapefiles) with botanical information. The data from the database are available online on a public portal www.pladias.cz, which also provides download options for various datasets and online identification keys to the species and vegetation types of the Czech Republic. In this paper, we describe the general scope, structure and content of the database, and details of the data on plant characteristics. To illustrate the data and describe the main geographic patterns in selected plant characteristics, we provide maps of mean values of numerical characteristics or proportions of categories for categorical characteristics on the map of the country in a grid of 5 longitudinal × 3 latitudinal minutes (approximately 6.0 km × 5.5 km). We also summarize the main variation patterns in the functional traits in the Czech flora using the principal component analysis.

Understanding temporal changes in the distribution and abundance of various species is one of the key goals of conservation biology. During recent decades, the abundance and distribution of many species of plants and animals have declined dramatically, mainly because of habitat loss and fragmentation. The purpose of this study is to analyze the rate of extinction of orchids at various sites in different 20-year time intervals over the last 150 years, determined according to changes in society. Using the dataset of the orchid records of the Nature Conservation Agency of the Czech Republic, we determined the disappearance rate of orchids from sites using a grid of 1 × 1 km. We found that the vast majority of orchids disappeared from many of their historical localities in all time intervals analyzed. The number of sites suitable for Czech orchids declined by 8–92%, depending on the species. The most threatened orchid species in the Czech Republic are Spiranthes spiralis, Anacamptis palustris, Epipogium aphyllum and Goodyera repens. This all seems to be closely related with changes in agricultural practices in the open as well as in forest habitats. Preserving suitable orchid habitats seems to be the key for keeping Czech orchid flora alive.

Development of 18 microsatellite markers for Salvia pratensis

Salvia pratensis L. (Lamiaceae) is a perennial herb distributed throughout Europe from the Volga River in the east, to northern Spain in the west, to the southern European peninsulas (Balkan and Apennine) in the south, and to the Netherlands, Poland, and Germany in the north (Kaplan et al., 2018). A few locations are also recorded in the British Isles, where the species is protected (Kaplan et al., 2018). The species is diploid with 2n = 2x = 18 chromosomes (e.g., Van Loon, 1980). It is a typical representative of European temperate dry grassland vegetation. Grasslands represent one of the most species-rich but threatened ecosystems in temperate Europe (Habel et al., 2013). Understanding the phylogeographic history of such species is crucial for determining the postglacial history of these endangered ecosystems and is expected to facilitate the development of efficient conservation strategies.A total of 29 microsatellite markers have already been developed for S. officinalis L. (Molecular Ecology Resources Primer Development Consortium et al., 2010;Radosavljević et al., 2011Radosavljević et al., , 2012, a species representing a sister group to S. pratensis (Will and Claßen-Bockhoff, 2017). Twenty of these loci were tested for cross-amplification to S. pratensis, but successful cross-amplification has been reported for only five (Radosavljević et al., 2011). For a state-of-the-art computational approach, this low number of microsatellite markers is inadequate for a comprehensive phylogeographical or population genetic study. Therefore, we set out to develop a set of markers specifically for S. pratensis. This marker set was tested for cross-amplification in other species of Salvia L.
