Distribution of Nucleosides in Populations of Cordyceps cicadae

Abstract: A rapid HPLC method had been developed and used for the simultaneous determination of 10 nucleosides (uracil, uridine, 2'-deoxyuridine, inosine, guanosine, thymidine, adenine, adenosine, 2'-deoxyadenosine and cordycepin) in 10 populations of Cordyceps cicadae, in order to compare four populations of Ophicordyceps sinensis and one population of Cordyceps militaris. Statistical analysis system (SAS) 8.1 was used to analyze the nucleoside data. The pattern of nucleoside distribution was analyzed in the sampled po… Show more

“…I. cicadae has many putative active functions such as: antitumor activity, analgesic activity and amelioration of renal function [2,3]. I. cicadae is an anamorph of Cordyceps cicadae which contains not only nutrients such as proteins, amino acids and various trace elements, but also various bioactive constituents such as sterols, cyclic peptides, nucleosides, and polysaccharides [4][5][6]. As market demand increases, natural supplies of I. cicadae have been widely depleted due to over harvesting, thus artificial culture of I. cicadae by inoculation of I. cicadae on plants (wheat or rice) provides a productive way to obtain large-scale I. cicadae.…”

“…In Chinese traditional medicine, C. cicadae has a long history of use as treatment for fever, convulsion, heart palpitation, and diabetes (Kuo et al, ; Olatunji, Tang et al, ; Zhang, Olatunji, Chen, Tola, & Oluwaniyi, ). C. cicadae is an interesting source of a number of bioactive compounds namely sterols (ergosterol and ergosterol peroxide), nucleosides (adenosine, cordycepin, and N 6 ‐2‐hydroxyethyl‐adenosine), cyclodepsipeptides, and polysaccharides (Olatunji, Tang et al, ; Wang et al, ; Zeng et al, ; Zhu, Zheng, Deng, Chen, & Zhang, ). N 6 ‐2‐hydroxyethyl‐adenosine (HEA; Figure ) is one of the major bioactive nucleosides present in C. cicadae and it possesses a wide variety of therapeutic activities such as antidiabetic, antiinflammation, Ca 2+ antagonist, sedative, analgesic, antitumor, and renoprotective properties (Li et al, ; Lu, Chen, Lee, Lin, & Kuo, ; Meng, Kang, Wen, Lei, & Hyde, ; Zheng et al, ).…”

“…Cordyceps cicadae X. Q. Shing (Clavicipitaceae, Ascomycotina), named 'Chan Hua', an anamorph of Isaria cicadae Miq, is a major parasitic fungus growing on the nymphs of Cicada flammata Distant, Platypleura kaempferi Fabricius, Crytotympana pustulata Fabricious, Platylomia pieli Kato and Oncotympana maculatieollis Motsch [1]. As a traditional Chinese medicine used for thousands of years, 'Chan Hua' is reported to possess antitumor, antibacterial, immunoregulatory and sedative effects, and is widely used in the treatment of fever, infantile convulsion, palpitation and dizziness [2].…”

“…A crude extract of the drug was chromatographed repeatedly on the MCI gel CHP 20P, HW-40F, normal phase silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, and reversed phase silica gel. As a result, one new heterocyclic compound, 5,5'-di (2-ethyl-hexyloxy)-5,5'-bifuran (1) (Figure 1), was obtained, together with fourteen known compounds. Herein, we report the isolation and structural elucidation of compound 1.…”
