Nanomedicine is a new distinct scientific discipline that explores applications of nanoscale materials (1-1000 nm) for various biomedical applications. At nanoscale, the physical properties of materials are altered as well as their interactions with cells and tissue. This occurs primarily because of the significant difference in the surface area-volume ratio as materials are reduced to nanosized level 1 . Nanomedicine explores nanotechnology for monitoring, repair, and control of human biological systems at cellular and molecular levels using engineered nanodevices and nanostructures 2 . Nanomedicine thus can improve diagnosis and treatment, and it can also be used in tissue engineering to replace some functions of human organs. The potential scope of nanotechnology in urology is wide-ranging, from prevention to early detection, treatment, prognosis, and symptom management 3 . The most common nanoscale drug delivery and imaging vehicles (nanocarriers) include polymeric nanoparticle, dendrimers, nanoshells, liposomes, nucleic acid based nanoparticles, magnetic nanoparticle, and virus nanoparticles 4 . This review summarizes some of the emerging applications of nanomedicine in urology.

Cytotoxic drugs encapsulated into liposomes were originally designed to increase the anticancer response, while minimizing off-target adverse effects. The first liposomal chemotherapeutic drug was approved for use in humans more than 20 years ago, and the first publication regarding its use in a canine cancer patient was published shortly thereafter. Regardless, no general application for liposomal cytotoxic drugs has been established in veterinary oncology till now.Due to the popularity of canines as experimental models for pharmacokinetic analyses and toxicity studies, multiple publications exist describing various liposomal drugs in healthy dogs. Also, some evidence for its use in veterinary cancer patients exists, especially in canine lymphoma, canine splenic hemangiosarcoma and feline soft tissue sarcoma, however, the results have not been overwhelming. Reasons for this may be related to inherent issues with the enhanced permeability and retention effect, the tumour phenomenon which liposomal drugs exploit. This effect seems very heterogeneously distributed in the tumour. Also, it is potentially not as ubiquitously occurring as once thought, and it may prove important to select patients for liposomal therapy on an individual, non-histology-oriented, basis. Concurrently, new developments with active-release modified liposomes in experimental models and humans will likely be relevant for veterinary patients as well, and holds the potential to improve the therapeutic response. It, however, does not resolve the other challenges that liposomal chemotherapy faces, and more work still needs to be done to determine which veterinary patients may benefit the most from liposomal chemotherapy. Introduction:Nanotechnology has revolutionized our approach to medical diagnostics as well as therapeutics and has spanned an entirely new branch of research. This review addresses the potential applications of Nanotechnology in Urology. This article is based on the Dr. Sitharaman Best Essay award of the Urological Society of India for 2016.Methods:A PubMed search was performed for all relevant articles using the terms, “nanotechnology, nanoparticles, nanoshells, nanoscaffolds, and nanofibers.”Results:The developments in diagnostics include novel techniques of imaging of genitourinary malignancies, prostate-specific antigen measurement, early detection of mutations that are diagnostic for polycystic kidney disease. The potential applications of nanotechnology are in the targeted therapy of genitourinary malignancies, erectile dysfunction, overactive bladder, bladder reconstruction, construction of artificial kidneys and biodegradable stents as well as in robotic surgery.Conclusions:Nanotechnology is a rapidly emerging branch of research in urology with diverse and clinically significant applications in diagnostics as well as therapeutics.

Abstract: The present results demonstrate that Lip-Dox injected into the bladder submucosally distributes well, both in the whole bladder wall and in regional lymph nodes and remains at a high concentration in these tissues for at least one week after injection.
