Dissimilar friction stir lap welding of AA2198 and AA7075 sheets: forces, microstructure and mechanical properties

Abstract: This paper investigates the dissimilar friction stir lap welding of AA2198 and AA7075 sheets. The influence of processing parameters, namely welding speed and tool rotational speed on joint features, microstructure, and mechanical properties were studied by implementing a full factorial design of experiments. Axial and transversal forces were continuously measured during the welding process using a sensed fixture aiming at the correlation of processing parameters, forces, and quality of the achieved joints. Ob… Show more

“…4.1.6. Friction stir lap welding of Aluminum Alloys AA2198 with AA7075 [151] The core materials utilized were sheets of AA2198 T351 (3.2x100x200 mm 3 ) Al alloy and AA7075 T6 (2x100x200 mm3) alloy. Placing the AA2198 on top and the AA7075 on the base of the overlap arrangement with a 25 mm overlap length, welding activities were carried out.…”

“…Moreover, the dissimilar FSW of Mg alloys is also used extensively. It is reported [68][69][70] that FSW is now deemed developed enough to be used in aircraft manufacture, and its capacity to combine dissimilar metals in different configurations has already been proved. FSW, among other welding methods, reduces metallurgical flaws and distortion while also reducing weight and expense.…”
