Introduction: Body image perception is the way a person feels about his/her body and these feelings can be positive, negative or both. It is ever changing, and is influenced by individual and environmental factors. It can be both selfperceived or as perceived by others like family, friends, peer group, teachers etc. Objectives: To assess the body image perception of adolescents and the associated factors and to assess the effect of family, friends, peers and others on the body image perception of adolescents. Methodology: This was a cross sectional study. Four divisions from classes 9, 10, 11 and 12 of a private school, Thrissur were randomly selected. There were 179 students in total. A pretested self administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Results: The proportion of boys (50.3%) and girls (49.7%) were almost equal. In this study 65.4% of the adolescents were having normal BMI for their age.26.2% of the subjects had overweight and 8.4% of the subjects were undernourished. Varying degrees of negative body image perception was seen among 84.91% of subjects. Erroneous body size perception was seen among 36.8% of the subjects. This was statistically significant. A larger proportion of females (40.4%) compared to males (23.4%) was dissatisfied by their body size. Mean BMI was significantly higher in those who were not satisfied with their body size and those who had tried to lose weight in their past. Negative correlation was observed between body image perception and academic performance of the students. Conclusion: A high proportion of adolescents had negative body image perception. Targeted activities have to be carried out to improve their perception.

Objetivo: el propósito del estudio fue relacionar los niveles de insatisfacción con la imagen corporal, el estado nutricional, el riesgo cardiometabólico y la capacidad cardiorrespiratoria en escolares preadolescentes. Material y métodos: participaron de la investigación 339 escolares, 165 niñas (11,29 ± 0,69 años) y 174 niños (11,22 ± 0,72 años). Se recolectaron datos antropométricos, índice de masa corporal (IMC), porcentaje de masa grasa (%MG), contorno cintura (CC), razón cintura-estatura (RCE), VO 2 máx y la imagen corporal. Resultados: en la comparación por sexo encontramos valores superiores en el V0 2 máx en los niños (p < 0,001), las variables IMC, CC, RCE, presión arterial e imagen corporal no reportaron diferencias significativas (p > 0,05). El 27,7% de la muestra de estudio presentó sobrepeso y un 29,2%, obesidad. Los sujetos con obesidad reportaron los niveles más bajos de VO 2 máx. La insatisfacción con la imagen corporal presentó asociación con el estado nutricional (p < 0,001). Además, un 8,1% de los estudiantes obesos presentó extrema insatisfacción con la imagen corporal. Un 19,4% de los niños con riesgo cardiometabólico presentó algún tipo de insatisfacción y existió asociación entre ambas variables (p = 0,008). Conclusiones: el estudio pone de manifiesto que los niños con malnutrición por exceso presentan alteraciones asociadas a la insatisfacción corporal y otros indicadores de salud, que limitan el crecimiento integral en la etapa de preadolescencia. Perception of body image and nutritional status in adolescents of public schools

Objective: To assess body image dissatisfaction among adolescents from Northern Minas Gerais. Method: This is a cross-sectional study with adolescents of both sexes, enrolled in the sixth to ninth year in the municipal public education network. A questionnaire was used, composed of sociodemographic and body image variables, which was obtained through a scale of silhouette figures. The anthropometric measurements of weight and height were performed to estimate body mass index. The correlation between the classification of the body mass index and the body image of adolescents was estimated through weighted Kappa. Results: A total of 535 adolescents participated, and 24.5% had different classifications between the real and ideal body image. The Kappa index for the classification of body image was 0.51, 0.58 and 0.32 for the total of adolescents, girls and boys, respectively. Conclusion: Public school adolescents are dissatisfied with their self-body image.
