A comprehensive review is presented on the current trends in sample preparation for isolation of veterinary drugs and growth promotors from foods. The objective of the review is to firstly give an overview of the sample preparation techniques that are applied in field. The review will focus on new techniques and technologies, which improve efficiency and coverage of residues. The underlying theme to the paper is the developments that have been made in multi-residue methods and particularly multi-class methods for residues of licensed animal health products, which have been developed in the last couple of years. The role of multi-class methods is discussed and how they can be accommodated in future residue surveillance.

The development of a QuEChERS-HPLC-DAD method using a Lichrospher 60 RP-Select B column (250 x 4.6 mm x 5 µm) at 40°C, mobile phase constituted by phosphate buffer:acetonitrile (75:25, v/v) at a initial flow rate of 0.5 mL min -1 , increased by 1.2 mL min -1 and at 265 nm is presented for simultaneous determination of sulphadiazine, sulphametoxipiridazine and sulphamethoxazole in chicken breast samples. QuEchERS is inexpensive, fast and easy, and the extraction of the analytes of the matrix was successfully employed. In addition, the method presented linearity, in the range of 25, 50, 100, 150, 175, and 200 µg kg -1 , precision, selectivity and sensitivity. The intraday precision (RSD %) for QuEChERS method was between 3.6-10.8 (SDZ), 6.9-14.1 (SPZ) and 1.9-10.9 (SMX) and interday precision (RSD%) was between 1.5-9.7, 1.7-4.1 and 2.1-10.2, respectively. Results of accuracy (bias) were in the range of -8.6 to +11.9 %. Therefore, the validated method is clearly useful for the practical residue monitoring of the drugs evaluated in chicken samples, as all the values were within the acceptable criteria used for food safety. Of 6 samples analyzed, none of them showed contamination of the sulphonamides studied at detectable levels. , aumentando 1,2 mL min -1 e a 265 nm é apresentado para a determinação simultânea de sulfadiazina, sulfametoxipiridazina e sulfametoxazol em amostras de peito de frango. A precisão intradia (RSD %) para o método QuEChERS foi entre 3,6-10,8 (SDZ), 6,9-14,1 (SPZ) e 1,9-10,9 (SMX) e a precisão interdias (RSD%) foi entre 1,5-9,7, 1,7-4,1 e 2,1-10,1, respectivamente. Resultados de exatidão (tendenciosidade) foram na faixa de -8,6 a +11,9%. Portanto, o método validado é útil para a monitorização de resíduos de medicamentos avaliados em amostras de frangos, bem como todos os valores estavam dentro dos critérios aceitáveis utilizados para a segurança dos alimentos. De seis amostras analisadas, nenhuma apresentou contaminação de sulfonamidas nos níveis detectáveis estudados.

A técnica de cromatografia líquida acoplada a um espectrômetro de massas com ionização "electrospray" (LC-ESI-MS/MS) foi usada para a determinação simultânea de resíduos de dez sulfonamidas (SAs: sulfacetamida, sulfatiazol, sulfamerazina, sulfametazina, sulfametoxipiridazina, sulfametazol, sulfacloropiridazina, sulfametoxazol, sulfadimetoxina e sulfaquinoxalina) em ovos. As amostras foram preparadas por precipitação das proteínas com acetonitrila seguida por extração em fase sólida. Após remoção do solvente e reconstituição, os extratos finais foram injetados no LC-ESI-MS/MS no modo positivo para todas as sulfonamidas. O método validado resultou em recuperação entre 87 e 116% com desvios padrão relativo entre 8,5 e 27,2%, CCa entre 101,0 e 122,1 ng g -1 e CCb entre 114,5 e 138,8 ng g -1 . O método analítico, no qual foram utilizadas amostras fortificadas, foi validado baseado na Decisão da Comissão 2002/657/CE.Liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization -tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS/MS) was used to simultaneous determination of ten sulfonamide (SAs) residues (sulfacetamide, sulfathiazole, sulfamerazine, sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxypyridazine, sulfamethizole, sulfachloropyridazine, sulfamethoxazole, sulfadimethoxine and sulfaquinoxaline) in eggs. Samples were extracted with acetonitrile and the supernatants were cleaned up by solid phase extraction. After solvent evaporation and reconstitution, aliquots of the final extracts were injected into a LC-ESI-MS/MS in positive mode for all sulfonamides. The validated method resulted in recoveries ranging between 87 and 116% with relative standard deviations between 8.5 and 27.2%, CCa between 101.0 and 122.1 ng g -1 , and CCb between 114.5 and 138.8 ng g -1 . The analytical method, using fortified samples, was validated based on the Commission Decision 2002/657/EC.
