Discrimination experiments with the U.S. Army's standard metal detector

Abstract: [1] Discrimination experiments with the U.S. Army's standard hand-held metal detector (AN/PSS-12) are described. An appendix describes the functioning of the device as a metal detector, and the body of the paper discusses modifications to the device necessary to carry out the discrimination experiments. Half of the mines in a large blind test grid were correctly identified with nearly zero false alarms, but the false alarm rate increased substantially for detection probabilities greater than one half. Degradat… Show more

“…Above, we provide the system by microprocessor µC mounted in Arduino board with an LCD to make reading so easy. Moreover, we can manage, and discriminate changes of magnetic properties ranges of frequencies [15][16]. The electric circuit in which we show the added part is given below: The developed device contains two loops as BFO oscillator.…”

“…In the study discussed in Ref 9 , the focus is on binary classification—determining whether an object is a mine or not with using spatial measurement diversity. The results indicate best performance of a 50% probability of detection (& identification) of mines with minimal false alarm rate (of less than 5%).…”

“…We will not investigate these "tricks" in this paper but will focus on the fundamentals. originally, it seems the beat frequency oscillator detector will be the best choice to build caused by its relatively simple circuitry, which will allow us to focus more on the electromagnetinc theory during the project [9]. The basic way the Beat Frequency Oscillator (Later only BFO) works, when the detector coil is above some metal, it will change the frequency in the detector oscillator, which has the detector coil in the frequency depended circuit.…”
