Direct observations of vacuum ultraviolet rays for surface‐discharge ac plasma displays by using an ultra‐high‐speed electronic camera

Abstract: Abstract— Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) rays emitted from Xe during the operation of surface‐discharge ac plasma‐display panels (PDPs) were observed directly by using a recently developed ultra‐high‐speed electronic camera. It is confirmed that 147‐ and 173‐nm VUV rays are emitted from both the cathode and the anode simultaneously. The direct observation shows that the emitting area for 147‐ and 173‐nm emissions above the cathode and the anode extends outward from the edge of the gap. These emission extensions are … Show more

“…ICCD cameras have also been used to measure images of the VUV emission measurements. Such VUV imaging measurements have been reported by Sawa et al [167] and Yoon et al [168] and show that photon emission from the resonant line at 147 nm (Xe * ) and from the 173 nm continuum (Xe *…”

“…This indicates that the plasma above the anode is more efficient in term of xenon excitation and therefore of UV production than the plasma above the cathode. The VUV measurements 7,8 in real PDP cells confirm that the plasma above the anode also emits UV photons, which is coherent with the above discussion.…”

“…We have compared the space and time variations of the measured light emission from xenon and neon lines with results from two-dimensional fluid models. 8,2 The agreement is qualitatively good and the model reproduces well the features described above. We only report here comparisons between the measured and calculated plasma expansion (or sheath contraction) velocity (defined in Fig.…”

“…The VUV emission measurements of Sawa et al 4 and Yoon et al 3 show that photon emission from the resonant line at 147 nm (Xe*) and from the 173 nm continuum (Xe 2 *) are present above both cathode and anode. This is consistent with the infrared emission measurements.…”
