Direct Estimate of Transport Length Scales in Semiconducting Polymers

Abstract: Conjugated semiconducting polymers form a class of materials that utilize facile polymer-processing methods and exhibit practically all the functional phenomena present in traditional semiconductors. [1,2] The successful use of organic semiconductors in optoelectronic applications such as lightemitting diodes [3] (LEDs), organic solar cells, [4] photodetectors, [5] photo-organic field-effect transistors [6] (FETs), optical sensors, [7] and light-emitting FETs [8,9] depend on the development of our understandin… Show more

“…The induced current signal is highly sensitive to electric fields and has been used to characterize contacts in nanowire and carbon nanotube devices, [4][5][6] quantitatively determine electron and hole mobility-lifetime products in CdS nanowires, [7] identify the active region in Si nanowire p-i-n photodetectors, [8] and investigate transport in thin-film organic semiconductors. [9,10] Furthermore, SPCM data has been analyzed to obtain qualitative potential profiles of devices with Schottky contacts. [4] The evolving shape of such profiles with applied gate or source-drain bias can be used to determine the charge depletion width [5] and Schottky barrier height in devices.…”

“…Decay length ( L d ) arrived from the photocurrent outside the active field zone essentially is a measure of efficacy of the bulk charge transport. This parameter in the first approximation is related to the mobility ( μ ) and lifetime of carriers . Even though the absolute hole μ cannot be estimated from L d in the complex disordered blend film, the changes in L d can be taken as a measure for improved microstructure.…”

“…Of the three basic red, green and blue colors, the efficiency, color purity, and lifetime of the first two have almost met the commercialization requirements for full color displays [90,91], whereas the blue light still lags far behind. This difficulty constitutes a bottle-neck that strongly challenges academic and industrial researchers [92,93].…”
